  • Eco-friendly Kent farm site five minutes' drive from Cranbrook
  • Scotney Castle, Bedgebury Pinetum and Bewl Water within 20 mins' drive
  • In the High Weald National Landscape, next to Three Castles Walk trail
Peaceful, spacious and eco-friendly are the watchwords at Glassenbury Camping, part of a 12-acre Kent farm in the High Weald National Landscape. This family-run site is all about appreciating the fabulous natural setting, so they’ve kept things simple here and focused on getting the basics just right for both guests and the environment. You’ll be staying in a large meadow that’s surrounded by hedgerows and tall trees, with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. It’s a fine setting at all times of day, but the south-facing aspect means it really comes into its own at sunset, when the sky is often filled with fantastic colours. The pitching meadow is big enough to allow plenty of space for kids to run around while the grownups relax in camping chairs – and you’ll be able to get a barbecue or campfire set up safely too. Designed to be a place where guests can escape the stresses of modern life, this is a quiet site where you’ll be asked to keep noise to a minimum (no big groups or late-night music, thanks). The whole place is off grid, so there's no electricity on site, and the eco-friendly facilities include compost toilets and a natural open-air urinal, plus hot showers and a washing-up area with hot and cold water. Unsurprisingly, this is prime walking and cycling territory, with plenty of paths to follow nearby, including a bridleway just north of the farm that’s part of the long-distance Three Castles Walk (linking Sissinghurst, Scotney and Bodiam castles). You can also walk through woodland to the village of Cranbrook in about half an hour (or drive in five minutes) for a pub, bakery, café or bus stop.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful views and a quiet campsite. Amazing sunset and clear skies to see all the stars. Facilities were well maintained and seemed enough for the amount of people there. Choose where you pitch. May be worth bringing something for shade as the field is south facing. Nearby Cranbrook is definitely worth a walk to (site owner gave us directions took about 40mins through a lovely wood). There is a lovely pub there called Larkins Ales the people in there were so friendly! Wheelbarrows provided to walk your stuff to your pitch as no cars allowed in the field - not a far walk the car park is right next to the camping field. Really enjoyed our weekend stay thank you!

Local attractions

There are plenty of great places to walk in this area, but a particular favourite is Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (15 minutes' drive) – and as well as the walking trails it’s also got mountain bike routes, a Go Ape course and several adventure play areas. Bewl Water (20 minutes) is another local favourite – you can walk or cycle around the perimeter or get out on the water for time spent boating, sailing or canoeing. You can also join open-water swimming sessions here or bounce across the obstacles of the aqua park. For a taste of the area's history, head to Scotney Castle (15 minutes), the English Heritage 1066 Battle of Hastings site (half an hour) or the action-packed Leeds Castle (half an hour). Sissinghurst Castle Garden (10 minutes) and Pashley Manor Gardens (15 minutes) are top picks for green-fingered guests. The south coast isn’t far off either – it’s a little over half an hour to Rye, Hastings or Camber Sands.
