  • Pop-up family site bordering the River Eden at Chiddingstone in Kent
  • Hever Castle and National Trust - Chartwell both 10 minutes’ drive
  • Off-grid pitches within five minutes’ walk of a pub, shop and tearoom
Looking for a peaceful camping holiday in rural Kent? One where you can get back to basics and fend for yourselves? A warm welcome awaits you (and any well-behaved accompanying dogs) at River Field, an off-grid pop-up site on a family farm. There are no set pitches so you can set up wherever you want in the 20-acre field edging the River Eden, and there are simple loos in a converted horse box nearby. Stay on site, unwind and keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife. Deer, foxes, badgers, pheasants, red kites, partridges, buzzards and many species of songbirds are regular visitors to River Field. Even otters have been reported to be seen at the river. There's a wealth of public footpaths to explore in the surrounding countryside, and a mere five minutes’ stroll takes you to Chiddingstone, a pretty village with one of the oldest high streets in the country – it dates back to the 16th century – where you will find a pub, village shop and tea room. Alternatively you can hop in the car for a day of cultural sightseeing at stately mansions and Tudor palaces within 10 minutes’ drive. You’ll also never go short of urban days out, with Royal Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Edenbridge all within an easy 20 minutes by car. Penshurst (10 minutes’ drive) has the nearest railway line, and the site owners are happy to shuttle campers to and from the station; there’s also a bus stop about 15 minutes’ walk away.

What customers say

A peaceful, spacious site in a lovely rural spot. Guests loved the clean washrooms, welcoming hosts, and quiet vibe. Close to a village pub, but the access road's rough and signage is minimal. Great for a relaxing country escape.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Plenty of space and flat pitches on a large field with the freedom to pitch anywhere, so you can be as close to or far away from others as you want. Clean toilets and washing up facility. The river borders the far side of the field and this makes for the more interesting pitch sites if you want to spot the wildlife in and around the river and its banks. Fire pits and barbecues permitted when no wildfire warnings in effect.

Helen, the manager, was very welcoming and keen to ensure the guests got the most out of their stays. They have only been open a few weeks but, already, they have plans to further improve the site.

Would thoroughly recommend for an as close to wild camping experience as possible.

P.S. no issues finding the site or accessing it after very clear explanation from the owner as we arrived after 6pm.

Liked Lots of space so your not on top of your neighbour.
Lots of wildlife. We were treated to seeing hundreds of Canada geese flying overhead to kand in neighbouring fields before all heading back to the reservoir at dusk.

Disliked Right under a flight path.
No access to the river.
Scrubby field full of weeds.

Local attractions

Heritage-seekers should make Chiddingstone (five minutes’ walk) their first port of call; as well as streets lined with half-timbered houses, you can tour the grounds and interior of handsome mock-gothic Chiddingstone Castle and seek out the renowned Chiding Stone, an ancient sandstone rock formation mired in mystery – it may have been a Saxon boundary stone or a Druid’s altar. Looking for more sightseeing inspo? Admire the Tudor extravagances that are moated Hever Castle and Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) and National Trust - Ightham Mote (20 minutes). You can also learn about the daily life of Winston Churchill in his study, gracious drawing room and painting studio at National Trust - Chartwell (10 minutes). Kids need a respite from cultural pursuits? Impressive Penshurst Place and Gardens (10 minutes) has a playground and woodland trail, and the British Wildlife Centre (25 minutes) offers encounters with foxes, badgers and deer. Got some adults-only time to yourself? Book a tasting session at the brewery in Chiddingstone village.
