  • Peaceful Isle of Wight pop-up site 15 minutes’ drive from Ventnor
  • Worsley Obelisk 40 minutes’ walk; Shanklin Beach 15 minutes’ drive
  • Compost toilets, water and USB charging; pubs 15 minutes’ stroll
No frills. No fuss. Just fresh air and bags of space to play. That’s what you get at Rusty Meadow pop-up site, which is 15 minutes’ drive from Ventnor on the Isle of Wight and provides its guests with a 15% discount on ferries to and from the mainland. Set in three acres of peaceful farmland, it has back-to-basics pitches in a hay meadow with composting toilets, drinking water and a solar-powered USB charging point. They’ve got almost all the essentials covered here – but it's worth noting there are no showers on site. A stay at Rusty Meadow is all about that old-school camping feel, with lots of wildlife around (look out for hares) and starry skies at night. The pitches are 15 minutes’ stroll from Godshill village, with its stores, tearooms and pubs as well as a fantastic wooden play park. It’s also only 15 minutes by car from Newport for supermarket shopping. Bring your boots, because there are lots of superb walking and cycling trails right from the camping field, including the route up to the Worsley Obelisk (about 40 minutes’ walk) for some of the island’s best views. Just so you know, there are bees living happily in the wildflower meadow at the far end of the farm. They’re a good distance from the pitches and keep to themselves, but the owners like to let guests know in case of any allergies. Families, small groups and quiet campers are very welcome. If you’re after loud music, late nights and party vibes, this is probably not the site for you.

What customers say

This peaceful, well-maintained campsite offers beautiful views and a "back to basics" feel. Guests love the clean composting toilets, charging stations, and friendly owners. It's a quiet, spacious, and secluded spot. While some noted a lack of showers and hot dishwater, this was often expected. A few reviews mentioned sloped pitches and suggested better signage for vehicle movement. Highly recommended for a quiet getaway.

Liked Lovely peaceful site. Really beautiful surroundings. Owners were really friendly and kept the site spotless. An organised run with bacon sarnies at the end topped off a fab weekend!

Bell tent (adults only, premium)

Liked A stunning peaceful slice of heaven. Nikki and family has created a wonderful space in nature and as a solo female traveller I felt safe and looked after. I stayed in the bell tent which came furnished for 6 nights and I had everything I needed, it was comfortable and beautiful inside, I've slept the best I have in years. Thank you so much for the hospitality and I will be back.

Disliked Nothing, everything was perfect, a magical stay with the eclipse and shooting stars as a bonus. What a beautiful view

3 bedroom ready tent

Liked Really nice welcome, lots of communication before stay. Camp site was as described and tent was all set-up with lots of camping equipment. Nice quiet location and plenty of space for everyone.

Disliked Could have been more taps around the campsite but there were quite a few.

From the manager: Thanks so much for your lovely review, David. It was a pleasure to welcome you and your family and we’re so pleased you enjoyed the Ready Tent, the peaceful setting and our communication before your stay. Hope the tournament went well!

Thanks for your feedback about the water points too. We have four fresh water points spaced around the camping field, along with two washing-up sinks, a separate wash-off tap and a handwashing sink outside the toilet facilities, all shown on the site map we send before arrival. We know every camper has different expectations, but we’re delighted to hear you otherwise had such an enjoyable stay and really appreciate your recommendation. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Local attractions

As well as its eateries and play park, Godshill (15 minutes’ walk) has a retro attraction at the Model Village, with scale replicas of Isle of Wight towns and a mini-train chugging around the topiary gardens. There’s also a quality gift shop at The Old Smithy and Gardens, as well as a kitschy fairy-themed trail through the grounds. Have fun with the kids while supporting a good cause at the Isle Of Wight Donkey Sanctuary (five minutes’ drive), or meet kangaroos and meerkats at Amazon World Zoo (10 minutes). To stretch your legs and hopefully spot some local wildlife, follow the Red Squirrel Trail from Wroxall (also 10 minutes) for sightings of (you guessed it) red squirrels as well as deer and woodpeckers. The site is just a short drive from south-coast beaches, including Shanklin and Ventnor (both 15 minutes), and Compton Bay (25 minutes). Hit a rainy day? Climb aboard the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet (20 minutes) and enjoy island views from a classic train carriage.
