  • Good access to the 10-minute walk to Compton Bay
  • Blackgang Chine theme park and Amazon World zoo within half an hour
How many islands are there off the coast of Britain? No-one can agree, but without dispute the biggest and one of the most famed is the Isle of Wight. On the western side of the isle, a five-minute drive from Compton Bay beach and the small village of Freshwater Bay, the land around Compton Farm Caravan and Camping has been farmed since 1086, and it’s still home to cows and chickens. As well as friendly creatures to meet, this family-run site has 18 acres of wildflower meadows for you to stretch out or run about on, as well as views towards the sea, and paths leading across the chalk downs to the coast. There are pubs, cafés and supermarkets within 10 minutes’ drive and barbecues and campfires are permitted back on the site. It’ll be hard to resist the call of the sea, so why bother? It’s a 10-minute walk to reach the coast and its wide sands and safe waters; Compton Bay's a cracking spot too for surfers, new and expert alike. For further waveborne antics, head to Freshwater Bay for kayaking and coasteering around the sea caves, as well as rock climbing up the cliffs.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Tent pitches are flat with some short grass. The path for cars is at a good distance so you don’t eat it too much. Utilities are close and clean. 4mins for 50p shower is more than enough

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Lovely farm location (with turkeys and chickens reigning free!) near great coastal walks. The campsite itself was located in a valley offering incredible sunrises in the morning. It was far back enough from road so that it was quiet during the evening.

Disliked: Although a minor point, I'd encourage the owners to make the 50p charge required for the shower to be known in listing on this site; at a time when cash is less common, it was a slight inconvenience. Also, please make clear what that 50p buys you as time felt a little on the mean side!

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Everyone was so friendly! Its in an amazing location and everything is kept up really well. the pitches were good sizes with benches and the option of staying on which ever pitch we wanted. Which was great as we could be a little further away as not to disrupt others. The toilet/showers were clean and tidy as well as the washing up station.

Disliked: Not really much i disliked, wish you got a bit more time in the shower or had the option to pause as it was probably enough time but waited for it to stop so i could apply conditioner and then spent another 50p just to wash it out. I do like the water saving though! Im glad we were as close to the toilets as we were but if others had booked before us and we had to pitch further away, i wouldn't have been too comfortable with the walk to the toilets.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Beautiful sight set in the rolling hills above Compton bay, which is itself the prettiest beach on the island. The site is just a twenty minute walk onto the beach itself and a ten minute walk to the beautiful cliffs overlooking the English Channel. Friendly and helpful owners and a lovely atmosphere around the campsite. Comfortable facilities that were cleaned regularly during our stay - hot showers. Just a five minute drive from Freshwater where there happened to be a double decker bus 'Travelling Tavern' which we enjoyed hugely over the week! We had planned to visit more of the Isle but found that we did not want to leave this lovely spot, so stayed on for three extra nights. Would definitely return here if I am on the Isle of Wight again - thank you for a lovely stay!

Disliked: Not a problem for me at all - but there is little to no signal in the campsite. Made for a lovely week of off-grid camping but might be a problem for others.

From the manager: Thank you Indira. I am so glad you had a lovely time at Compton.

Local attractions

Having stretched your limbs among the meadows back at base, you might be up for longer jaunts. The Isle of Wight Coastal Path will take you on a 70-mile circuit if so, or you can dip your toes in with shorter sections such as the six-mile stretch from Compton Down to the beach, or from Freshwater Bay to the geological chalky spikes that are The Needles. If you’re interested in the island’s lengthy history, head to Newport (25 minutes' drive) for walks round the Roman villa and tours of Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles I was held prisoner. Queen Victoria had a rather nicer time of it at her summer residence, Osborne House (40 minutes), where you can paddle on her private beach and see the miniature Swiss Cottage, where many of the royal children were raised. With a heady mix of rides and slides, dinosaurs, cowboys and pirates, Blackgang Chine Land of Imagination (half an hour) has been a family favourite for 175 years. For something even wilder, it’s the same distance to Amazon World Zoo, where 200-odd rare and exotic beasts await to meet you and your brood.
