  • Well-kept spacious pitches on a hilltop just outside Lymington
  • Beaulieu, Bucklers Hard and Highcliffe Castle within 20 minutes' drive
  • In the New Forest National Park, a 10-minute walk from the local pub
The history of Lymington dates all the way back to the Iron Age – folk have settled in this Hampshire market town for centuries, drawn by the possibilities presented by a location that’s close to both river and sea. And that mix of watery views is quite the draw for modern visitors too: this is a place that’s now something of a hub for sailing and yachting, and hosts a seawater swimming pool that also happens to be the UK’s oldest lido. All of this is easily accessed from Lymington Camping, in a rural location just outside the town and about five minutes’ drive/half an hour’s walk from its main centre. This particular spot has a lot going for it: not only is it easy to get to shops and places to eat, but it’s also in a rather lovely location up on a hill where you can spend evenings watching colourful sunsets. The site also happens to be just inside the boundary of the New Forest National Park – and that presents a whole load more things to see and do. From here it’s easy to head out for a walk or a bike ride (including a stop at the local pub, just over half a mile away, if you wish). There are lots of free-roaming animals to look out for as you explore, so keep your eyes open for wild ponies, cattle and donkeys (plus pigs in the autumn). All has been kept nicely simple on site, with limited numbers of pitches to make sure there’s a real feeling of space. Facilities include a washing-up area, hot-water shower, a flushing toilet and two eco loos – all are checked and cleaned regularly. There’s also a handy noticeboard of local information to keep you up to date.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: They had toilets.

Disliked: I felt like it was massively over sold in the pictures. Basically a giant field with nothing to do but sit on dead grass. Wasn't big enough to explore. There were loads of red ant nests, so be careful. No fires or barbecues allowed. Everywhere was a drive if you have children with you. It's not safe to walk from the campsite at night as it's mainly national speed limit roads with no path. Loads of gates but they weren't marked so couldn't work out if we would end up in the owners garden. We were kept up all night by speeding cars, so it wasn't even peaceful. It wasn't secure, as there was no one signing people in or out, just a guest book. No phone signal so couldn't even put a film on for the kids at night. No designated pitches. Just felt like I paid £25 to sit in someone's garden! Didn't even see any wildlife!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: I think this is my favourite ever campsite, certainly in the top few. The field is big, but only a few pitches are available, so it is very spread out. You choose where to pitch. We were a good 20m+ from our nearest neighbours. It was very relaxed. The views were lovely, as was the owner who came over to greet us. There weren't many bugs about. The facilities are basic, there is one flushing loo and two composting. One shower. A water point. A freezer. Two washing up sinks. That's it. However, given the few number of pitches available, there wasn't any queuing and it was all clean. EE phone signal was poor. Giffgaff/O2 seemed OK. Lymington town is about 1.5-2 miles away, Hurst Castle about 20 mins drive.
