  • Family-friendly site in the grounds of a New Forest activity centre
  • A 15-minute drive from Beaulieu; 20 from Exbury Gardens
  • Climbing wall and archery on site; 10 minutes' walk from a station
Forest rangers and active champs – here's a tried and tested site for you. New Forest locals and visitors have got up to all manner of open-air action at Tile Barn Outdoor Centre since it opened in the early 1970s. Set on the edge of the peaceful village of Brockenhurst, the site is a fab launchpad for those looking to get out and about in the New Forest National Park. This spacious 14-acre site has well-maintained facilities like loos, hot showers and a washing-up area, all of which can be reached via an accessible and well-lit path. There’s also a secure entrance gate with a key code, meaning you can relax and play in these green surrounds with extra peace of mind. On top of all that, there's a winning line-up of adventurous activities here, with climbing and archery often available – drop by for a chat with the friendly folk at reception to check what's on offer during your stay. The site is an easy 15-minute stroll from Brockenhurst village centre; the village doesn't have a cattle grid, so it's the kind of place where you may well see donkeys and cows wandering around. Watch them take a dip at the ford while you head to the supermarket to stock up, or treat yourself to a sticky bun from the bakery. A railway station with services to Lymington, Bournemouth, Southampton and London is a 10-minute walk away from base.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: location, grounds and check in process, availability of fire pits/bbq's, communal fridge/facility space. Level pitches and lovely staff.

Disliked: showers and toilets could be better maintained, very messy toilets.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: How quiet it was, very peaceful and everyone was friendly. Love how there were football goals placed around as well as volleyball. The lady at reception gave us our plot unfortunately one family to the right never put there tent further right which meant there was no pitch as it was to small. The receptionship was very accommodating and the site was fully booked however she allowed us to camp on the edges opposite climbing frame and it was fantastic so peaceful, closer to the toilet with young children and she was brilliant also for really accommodating. Really recommend the site.

Disliked: Dislike for me was no activities by time we got there as kids were looking forward to it however it’s one of those things. We arrived Saturday to Monday. I never realised there was a time table. I think a small park would be a great asset to the site so kids can play on swings or a small climbing frame.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Campsite great as usual. Nice setting and close To Brockenhurat.

Disliked: Loads of signs saying that fridges should not be used for alcohol yet one fridge rammed with drinks so no room for food. Same campers also helped themselves to firewood which we paid for which is a bit unfair. Staff didn’t appear to care.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loved the site was secure which was great for peace of mind with young kids, loved the size of pitches and the freedom to chose the best bit. Staff were friendly and helpful. Climbing was fun and well instructed/organised. The quietness was also good and kids can play together in the middle of the field. The kettle, fridge, freezers and microwave very handy. Ace location for exploring anywhere in the new forest.

Disliked: Nothing really. It would be lovely to have a play park too. Showers maybe could do with a bit of a makeover as the water although lovely and hot tended to escape out the door. Could potentially have less of them but bigger and family sized ones to make it easier to get three kids showered with more drying area.

Liked: Very clean well organised site. We were at the back of field two. Nice little shed by reception with a kettle microwave and fridge. Also a vending machine next door with cold drinks and sweets for £1. Lots of toilets in the block and interesting historical message boards. Friendly helpful reception desk.

Disliked: Quite a long walk to the toilet block from our location. WiFi signal was not good on the day we were there. I did manage to use it inside reception but lost it again when I walked outside.

Local attractions

Most folk visiting this spot will find a fair few things to do on site, but when you do decide to venture off you'll be out in the gorgeous open forest in no time. For riverside rambles, pack a picnic and head for the path from Beaulieu to Buckler's Hard (15 minutes' drive), a gentle stroll through varied New Forest countryside that joins up these two stonkingly scenic settings. After watching waders from riverside bird hides or heading out on a boat cruise from Buckler's Hard pier, make tracks back to Beaulieu and check out the National Motor Museum and its splendid cars and motorcycles. This place is more than just a collection of auto memorabilia (although there's plenty here if that's your thing) – visitors can also ride a monorail, traipse through the ruins of Beaulieu Abbey or take tours around plush Palace House. Also about are Hurst Castle Spit (20 minutes), a striking seaside spot with a Napoleonic fortress at the end, and Exbury Gardens (20 minutes), an exquisite 200-acre woodland that you can take in on foot or from a nifty narrow-gauge railway.
