Watercress Lodges Campsite: Lovely place to stay at

General

  • Family-run site by the Watercress Line: see the trains from your pitch
  • A minute's walk from steam engine events of Ropley station
  • Spotless amenities and friendly vibe 20 minutes from Winchester

Do you have a Thomas the Tank Engine fan or mini trainspotter in the family? They might just go up in a puff of excited smoke at Hampshire’s Watercress Lodges Campsite, so close to the historic Watercress Line that you’ll be able to see the trains’ steam from your tent pitch. Engine-ious.

No need to be out of puff when tracking other activities in the area either, as the line’s Ropley station and its railway bridge are both a minute or two’s walk from the site, and it has regular events for all ages including Thomas the Tank Engine and Wallace and Gromit days, dining evenings, real ale trains and Santa bookings. Just the ticket then for a well-conducted family hol…

The site is on land the Graham family has farmed for four generations and opened as a campsite in 2014, pulling out all the stops to make this a friendly site with a family vibe. Facilities including the new shower and toilet block are spotlessly kept by Jo and her team, who are on hand if guests have any problems or questions (and to pass out 2-for-1 vouchers for the Watercress Line).

Off site, once kids have let off steam at the railway, the small town of New Alresford is three miles away for supplies, shops and pubs, and the city of Winchester within a 20-minute drive.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

A wonderful small place to stay I can imagine in the summer holidays this gets busy but just out of season and was lovely, with all the extra blankets we brought from home it stayed toasty too.

A clean, quiet site, people friendly, lovely toilet block. Loved that there was a freezer where you could freeze your own blocks. Also a steam train station was right next to the campsite, with a small play park, which you can access for free.

    Disliked:

Anyone from the train station could enter the campsite, so not completely secure.

What a lovely spot! 5 of us camped here (2 adults, three children aged 7,9,11). Good facilities, adequate amount of showers and loos. Could pitch anywhere which was fab. My other half went home after 2 nights and I stayed another 2 nights on my own with the boys. I had been concerned about pitching/take down as it said no cars next to the pitch but in reality it was totally fine. You just pull your car up on the stone road/track near where you want to camp and it’s only a few metres of carrying stuff. Was totally fine, even as a solo adult packing away the worlds biggest tent. In the washing up building there was a freezer so you could re/freeze ice packs any time no charge which was fab!
The best thing was the location! Connected to the campsite is Ropley steam train station. On site there’s a lovely train playground, an educational room with toys and games and dressing up stuff, station shop, a snack shack (the T junction) and beautifully maintained station. So much activity withthe trains to watch. Oh and on the Saturday was the freee (though pls donate) miniature railway. And then you can buy tickets and go on the steam trains themselves! We did a round trip, a trip to Alton and a trip to alresford. Lovely towns with good pubs and a few shops. Curtis museum
In Alton worth a visit. Even packing up on day 5 the boys asking when we could come back. Was great to have 4 nights of no screens star gazing and playing board games at this quiet, idyllic spot. We will be back!
