  • Family-run eco-friendly site on the banks of the Thames
  • A mile from East Tilbury village; 40 minutes' drive to Southend-on-Sea
  • Next to a nature park and on the Thames Estuary Path
Views of the Thames? Yes, very much so – Essex site Thamesview Camping is right on the banks of the mighty river, looking out over Coal House Fort in one direction and the Essex Wildlife Trust Thameside Nature Discovery Park. A mere hour’s journey from London (by car or public transport – the rail station is a 15-minute walk away), this is a prime spot for those seeking an easy escape from the capital, or guests hoping to mix up a city break with some rural fresh air. Waterside footpaths, cycle routes, birdwatching and fishing are all popular activities here, as is simply looking out over the water to see what you can see (there’s a colony of seals out there, and you may also spot Benny the Beluga swimming about…) As this family-run space is primarily focused on the area’s natural attractions, it’s no surprise that the team have set it up to be as eco-friendly and peaceful as possible. No loud music is allowed here, and guests are encouraged to be mindful of the environment and each other, keeping dogs under control and following the countryside mantra of ‘leave no trace’. A local wildlife guide is on hand if you want to get to know your surroundings a little better. Campfires are welcome too (or essential, some might say) and the folk on site can help out by selling you locally sourced firewood with virtually no carbon footprint. Other supplies for campfire cookery can be picked up a mile away in East Tilbury (or you could skip the cooking and head to the local pub, 10 minutes’ walk away, instead…)

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked A peaceful site, with an Environment friendly ethos. Compost toilets spread out across the site, washing up facility and showers.
Easy to book and self check in.

Disliked Not a negative comment but we didn’t realise we wouldn’t be allocated a pitch. It was a turn up and find a pitch scenario and as we arrived later afternoon therefore we couldn’t easily find an available pitch but regardless we found somewhere on the end and was quite happy.

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Nice mown circular pitches with allows each person their own space, separated by longer grass. Good security too with locks on the gates so no passersby wandering through. Hot water for washing up.

Disliked Compositing toilets ran out of toilet roll and didn't feel well looked after. Didn't see anyone visit them all day Saturday despite the site being packed.
Lots of people allowing kids to scream and run about well into the night. 11.30pm it finally got quiet (curfew for noise here is 11pm but most campsites suggest 10pm, so i think the later curfew encourages the noise running late into the evening).

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Excellent location , large circular pitches separated by natural long grass with pathways between gave excellent privacy but still allowing to be social if you wanted to. Definately our prefered pitch design. The picnic bench and fire pit per pitch was prefect and we'll used. Really warm powerful shower, the best we had use at a campsite for a while. Found the compost loos easy to use from the instructions (plenty of them). Washing and washing up sink used and two water points were plenty. Definately will stay againand extended our stay whilst we were there. Meet some really nice people and there are great walks to the forts (& cafe) or nature reserve also excellent for our dog Prefect for star grazing & sunrises and falls around the firepit. Others staying at the same time found it easy to catch a train into central London and also to bike ride from here.

Disliked Nothing.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great spot. I liked the mown areas with benches and a fire pit – it gave the plot a natural, relaxed feel. There’s a back gate leading to a good walking route, and amenities were close enough to reach on foot without being intrusive. The site facilities were excellent, including clean loos, a shower, and firewood.

Overall, the easy drive-up access and generous plot made for a very comfortable pitch.

Disliked Nothing - I will definitely be back!

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Everything about it. It was an absolute pleasure to stay here. Quite an interesting and unusual site, with emphasis on being low impact and eco-friendly. The site also has a very laid-back approach, with nobody on site but a very responsive and helpful Vince just a phone call away. It was a really peaceful stay, with good space between pitches. The fire pits are a real bonus, and make all the difference to the experience, with logs being available to purchase (via QR code and payment site). There is a really nice walk along the sea wall, including to the nearby Tilbury Fort which is worth a visit.

Disliked Being unable to amend a booking date, via Pitchup. Really this should be part of the site functionality. Same with being able to edit a review.
Otherwise the only minor niggle was the shower was a bit too hot for me, personally, albeit adjusting the shower head helped a little.

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Ed: Unfortunately, someone ketted behind the cloakroom and our dog ate it. The one apparently smoked marijuana, whereupon our dog had to go to the hospital !!

This is how it translates to English.
Was your dog on a lead?

If so how did you let it eat anything?

Why was this not reported at the time?

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Very spacious pitches spread out around the site so they're not right next to each other. Picnic bench and firepit on the pitch was a nice plus. Plenty of toilets around site so you don't have to walk too far to one.

Local attractions

Start local by exploring the Thameside Nature Discovery Park, next to the site – footpaths and bike trails crisscross the 120-acre site with lots of wildlife to spot in this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Alternatively, give your legs a really good stretch with a walk on the 27-mile Thames Estuary Path, which runs alongside the site. Stop by at the Coalhouse Fort (15 minutes’ walk) for a touch of glamour – it’s regularly used as a film location (perhaps most famously for Batman Begins). The Thames opens out into the sea, of course – and not that far away, either. Set off for a seaside day with outings to Canvey Island (25 minutes’ drive) or Southend-on-Sea (40 minutes). Both have indoor attractions too, which is handy for less clement days – Canvey Island Transport Museum and Southend’s Sea Life Adventure are good picks for such times.
