Right next to a splendid beach on Mersea Island, and within easy strolling distance of cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops in the town of West Mersea, West Mersea Holiday Park is in a real cracker of an Essex location. Is this an island or not quite? Well, it all rather depends on when you visit – for the vast majority of the time it’s actually connected to the mainland, but when the tide rolls in it briefly transforms into an island that’s completely cut off. It’s a fine place to visit whether it’s in full-on island mode or not: there are some tiptop coastal views to be admired from the park and it’s close to the Blackwater Estuary, a nature reserve that’s particularly popular with migrating seabirds (and the birdwatchers who set out to spy them). With that coastline also comes easy access to watersports (sailors, windsurfers and kitesurfers will all find plenty to amuse nearby) and oodles of tasty seafood. Sole, mullet, herring, bass, skate and cod are all frequently hooked out of the ocean here, and it really wouldn’t do to miss the excellent native oysters as well. A shop is on site for picking up grub to go with your fish and there’s a café for days when you don’t fancy cooking for yourself. Other facilities include a play area and a launderette, plus a clubhouse where folk gather for food, drinks and entertainment in the form of cabaret acts.

Liked Lots of space per pitch - grass and hard standing. Each pitch also has a water tap.

Great location right by the coast. We were able to walk to the seafood restaurants right along the beach which only took about 25 mins.

Disliked Showers were scalding hot. Too hot! And dressing areas needed a good cleaning. There were cobwebs everywhere although shower cubicles and toilets were very clean.

And friendly, bar and restaurant amazing. Pitches are good.

Disliked Showers and toilet block desperately need an upgrade, only 3 showers and one of them overflows as the drainage is too slow.

Liked We like the area here and have been before.
Nice quiet site

Disliked Shame our holiday was cancelled due a ‘mix up’ with the booking?! Our balance was taken automatically but we still received numerous e-mails threatening us with cancellation, and even though we responded it was cancelled meaning I had to phone to get it reinstated.

Club house not serving meals in the evening

Liked The pub was good with live entertainment.
Food average, normal pub grub.
Toilets decent, but too far away
Nice beach side location.
Nice field for dog walking
Nice receptionist.

Disliked Pitch size bit small, feel like you are on top of each other.
Showers and toilets too far away luckily had our own toilet. But having to walk to them especially in rubbish weather would have been horrid.
Showers, one blocked. Meldew and smell in other 2. Also weird set up as small shower cubicle and changing bit without privacy??
Never come across this before??

Liked Pitch was on the front so was lovely. Loved the dog bath so was very handy after the sea dip they both had

Disliked Went to grab a drink and something from the club house around 7.30 and it was closed and the toilets were so far away

Liked Very nice sized pitch,well kept,nice quiet area,clean,club house very nice and very welcoming, nice atmosphere

Disliked Found having to walk to use showers and toilets bit harsh at 3am in morning in wind snd rain,also found shower blocks showing there age and looking tatty,the elsan point is the only place to empty waste,and having to lift heavey waste container is not good as its got high end wall.

Liked Club house great lovely meals , shop has everything you need and a lovely cafe

Disliked The shower blocks need to be built next to the touring pitches as the static homes have showers built in them a little bit of a walk to them

Liked Clean site, bar, playing field and playground close by and good access to the beach. Toilet/shower block isn't that far (5 min walk) and although dated all worked well

Disliked Very uniformed spaces which I expect could feel slightly on top of each other (especially with awning up) but we were there with family who were next to us so wasn't an issue

When you’re not birding on the Blackwater Estuary, investigate another nature reserve, the Essex Wildlife Trust Fingringhoe Wick (20 minutes' drive), a 200-acre habitat of 200 species of winged creatures, 27 types of dragonflies and damselflies, 24 sorts of butterflies, plus a few adders and badgers. Admire the 350 species of flowers too while looking out for critters too, then seek out more botanicals in the Beth Chatto Gardens (half an hour). For more animals, Colchester Zoo (25 minutes) is the place to see everything from cheetahs to lemurs, while fish fans might want to amble around the aquarium in Clacton-on-Sea instead. This coastal town also has a beach, pier and amusement park to busy the kids with; for more tiddler-friendly things to do, chuck the Go Bananas indoor playground (25 minutes) and the Curve Watersports aqua park (40 minutes) on your itinerary.
