Main pitch site

  • Dog-friendly, off-grid camping in the peaceful village of Rayne, Essex
  • The Discovery Centre five minutes’ drive; Colchester Zoo 25 minutes
  • Eggs and veg sold on site; pubs within five to 10 minutes’ walk
When you’re after an old-time camping adventure, with no electric hook-ups and few facilities apart from toilets, Stocks Farm Camping in Essex might well fit the bill. This back-to-basics site is on a large and level field, shielded from the weather by mature trees. There is a pond at the edge of the camping field so please make sure any dogs are on a lead and children are supervised at all times for their safety. It goes without saying that you should clean up after your pets – and indeed yourselves – so leave the pitches exactly as you found them. Free-range eggs, seasonal vegetables and wood for the barbecue are available to buy from the farm, and you can pick up whatever else you need for barbecues (raise them off the grass please) from Braintree supermarkets (10 minutes’ drive). Alternatively, have a change of scenery in the evening and hotfoot it down to the pubs and restaurants in Rayne village (five to 10 minutes’ walk). By day, stroll the Flitch Way (10 minutes) along a former railway line directly from the camping field, or treat the kids to a run around at Great Notley Country Park (20 minutes’ walk), with its multitude of climbing frames. Finally, if you’re looking for a bargain stopover before a flight from London Stansted, Stocks Farm Camping is only 20 minutes by car from the airport.

What customers say

A peaceful, well-kept spot with spotless facilities & roomy pitches. Katy & David are lauded for friendliness & helpfulness. Great location for exploring, with easy access to local attractions & the Flitch Way. A few noted limited washrooms, but most highly recommend it for the chill vibe & urge to return.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great grass pitch, the grass is kept very well. The owners are very nice people and were very good with the children - inviting them to go check the freshly laid eggs! Overall, a very comfortable stay and will come back. Loved being only a short walk to Notley Park where we had a great day.

Disliked Only issue is that there are only two toilets, however, as it is a small(ish) site I cannot see that the queues would ever get too big.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Could not fault Stocks Farm! We were the only people on the site during our stay, so had free roam of the whole field. Was advised we could pitch up wherever we liked, and the grass was just perfect for camping. The hosts Katy & David were super friendly, and were more than happy to help with anything we needed. My 6-year old step daughter quoted that 'they tried hard to make sure their visitors have a good time', so a big round of applause there! The utilities room had more than everything we needed, including garden games & toys for the children. Everything was kept so clean, and brought back a little bit of comfort to a back-to-basics camping trip. The homemade fudge was a yummy treat, and was a lovely addition to the already wonderful break. The star of the show had to be Katy & David's very friendly cat, Max, who was more than happy to sit around the campfire with us and give the children lots of cuddles. The local Cafe was only a short walk away, and served some delicious cakes, which certainly went down a treat! We will be sure to return in the future!

Disliked Absolutely nothing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked What a beautiful spot! Myself, six year old son and six year old nephew had the time of our lives. Nothing better than a back to basics campsite, no silly check ins or allocated pitches. Turn up pitch up have some fun and that is exactly what we did. The freedom of a field with fantastic owners who are friendly but not overbearing, honest, genuine and kind. Thank you we will be back soon, and I cannot finish without saying thank you to Max the cat who single handley stole the show. X

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We totally loved it there. The hosts could not do enough for us and were super friendly.
Beautiful site which was totally immaculate.
Based right on the flitch way so a safe walk for people with kids or dogs, through stunning countryside.
If you're a dog person, you have to meet Katy and Steve's adorable dogs!!! And the two very friendly and loving cats!
The best part of all had to be the delicious home made fudge which was to die for.
Would 1000% recommend.

Disliked Nothing!
