  • Peaceful Sussex site in the grounds of an 80-acre equestrian centre
  • In High Weald, 15 minutes' drive from Crowborough and 30 from Lewes
  • Firepits for hire; popular pub half a mile away
Those seeking peace, horses and a welcoming place for their canine pals are set to have a grand time of it at Hurstwood Farm, a calm farm spot at the southern end of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that’s set half a mile back from the nearest road. The site is also home to a popular riding centre and is within easy reach of a network of car-free trails and bridleways where you can roam on foot or in the saddle (riding must be booked in advance and is not suitable for beginners). It's also a lovingly-managed wildlife haven – the perimeter of each field here has a wild strip that's been totally left to nature, while the hedges are cut only every three to four years to enable birds to settle down and raise their young. Deer can frequently be seen prancing through Hurstwood Farm's 20 acres of wild woodland, so keep your eyes peeled for roe, fallow and muntjac species. Facilities here include toilets, hot showers and a washing-up corner. Seasonal local produce is sold, as is wood for the firepits that can be hired on site (please don't bring your own firepit). It's half a mile from here to the nearest pub, a popular joint that the site owners heartily recommend. Provisions for self-catered meals can be picked up at one of the supermarkets in Crowborough (15 minutes' drive), where there's also a leisure centre.

Falcon shepherd's hut

Liked We stayed in Shepherd's hut . The hut was clean and has all basic amenities . Amy was very helpful and she assisted us with all the necessary information beforehand.
Kids loved the quad bike with trailer ride from the car park .
Cool box was provided but make sure you bring packs of ice
The hut is solar powered and therefore bringing a fully charged power bank or power station is going to be helpful if you have fan or phones that needs charging many a times and the weather is cloudy

Camping pod

Liked Great size accommodation, with most things you could need. Lovely and quiet. Friendly staff.

Disliked Lots of spiders in the house. It felt like there had been no effort made to remove them (over 50). I live in the country and I’m pretty understanding, but they were everywhere.

From the manager: We take constructive criticism seriously so wanted to respond to the feedback regarding spiders. We are on a working farm and we take huge amounts of pride that our farm is full of huge amounts of wildlife, rare birds and rare butterflies. This is all because we try not to disrupt the eco system by leaving things be as much as possible. When we get very heavy rain as we did during your stay we do notice a lot more spiders tend to make their way inside our pods and cottages here on the farm. They are just trying to survive and as much as we try and humanely get rid of spiders in our accommodation we don't believe in killing them or sucking them up in the hoover. Every species of insect has a place to keep all the rare wildlife we are so incredibly lucky to have on our farm thriving. We will absolutely do our best to discourage the spiders as much as possible, just not to the detriment of all the incredible animals we have living here at Hurstwood Farm!
Unfortunately insect life and wildlife tends to be under estimated and un appreciated at times.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Perfect spot, well away from road noise and a real feeling of being in nature. Small campsite as well which reinforced that feeling. Owners super helpful and friendly. Great hikes straight from the site and a lovely pub a v short walk away.

Disliked Log cost was a bit steep/wouldnt hurt to have another toilet.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Peaceful back to nature site with clean functional shower/dry toilet/kitchen block.
The owner was very helpful but left you to enjoy the site without interfering.
I slept like a log for the two nights of my stay, and will certainly return for more of the same.
Poor phone reception in the area which I initially thought may be an issue, but ended up adding to the overall peaceful experience.

Camping pod

Liked We were very lucky to have the campsite to ourselves. The peace and quiet was just what we needed to recharge. The surrounding nature is beautiful and we spotted a lot of wildlife. A great place for walking. The facilities were great and the pod was cosy and comfortable. We felt very welcomed and will be looking to book another stay soon.

Local attractions

Country capers of all descriptions can be had around here, from golf at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club (10 minutes' drive) to fishing and cycling at Bewl Water (40 minutes). Those of you handy with a rod and reel can also try out night fishing in nearby Scaland Wood (10 minutes) – there's much to be said for returning to stroll through the forest when you've got the light to appreciate it, too. Craving something more urban and bohemian? Stop in Brighton (45 minutes) for window-shopping, veggie food and artsy stalls in North Laine or just some beachfront promenading. Though overshadowed by its bigger cousin on the coast, Lewes (30 minutes) also has a lot going for it: Sussex's county town has a splendid Norman castle, views over surrounding chalk cliffs and brims with ace independent shops. Tiddlers in your travel tribe, meanwhile, can kid around at Phileas Fogg's World of Adventures (40 minutes), swing through the trees at Branching Out Adventures (20 minutes) or be taken for smoky steam-powered rides on the Bluebell Railway (20 minutes).
