  • Barbecues and campfires allowed
Set up for stays of all sorts… friendly family-run Fontmills Farm Campsite in the Low Weald of East Sussex between Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells welcomes all sorts guests, from weary city dwellers seeking a countryside break to active types looking for adrenalised family hols. Whatever flavour of holidaymaker you are, pitching up here will have you within easy access to countryside trails and cycling along the tree-lined Cuckoo Trail, wandering the local coastline and villages, and visiting local sights including Seven Sisters Country Park, Beachy Head… and some of Sussex’s best-known pubs. Pitches at the farm are on grass, in a spacious field with plenty of room for running around. There are toilets, showers, a washing-up area and facilities for ice pack freezing. Campfires and barbecues are both allowed: if you fancy frying up eggs in the morning, ask the farm team if the hens have laid any ready to buy. Nearby, Heathfield farmers' market on the third Saturday of every month is the place to pick up fresh local produce, fruit, veg and meat.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location - backing on to Cuckoo Trail, I was able to hire a bike locally which was dropped off at the site for me👌
Spacing of pitches
Guidelines to keep the experience peaceful
Farm shop
Hosts
Lots of extras like hot showers and flushing toilets - I would have been just as happy without these but shower was most welcome after a long bike ride on a very hot day!
I felt safe as solo female camper due to hosts being onsite at the farm and the way the site is set out so I felt tucked away

Disliked Nothing!

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Easy signage, very friendly staff, shows us to our pitch and located us with sheltering from the wind, let us know of all the facility’s on sight and about the little farm shop, and came round just before they closed the office incase we needed anything.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked What we liked about the campsite..
How peaceful the campsite was, and all the stars at night.
The size of the pitches and how level they are.
It was really handy having our own picnic table at our pitch.
The owners were really friendly and attentive.
The shop has a good range of products for your camping needs.
Our daughter loved the animals.
The fact that the campsite is right next to the cuckoo trail is a real bonus, makes a lovely walk.
The showers were nice and hot.
It's great that the campsite allow bbqs and firepits, with the added bonus of being given a firepit to use during your stay.
We loved the campsite, and we will definitely be back in the near future.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Friendly hosts, peaceful location, family atmosphere, campfires, nature on the doorstep. We stay at a lot of sites (this was our 5th of the year) and this was up there with the best of the best. Nothing particularly fancy or pretentious about the site, more that everything is just done really well. Will definitely be coming back!

Liked Nice fields, with woodland nearby and direct access to the cuckoo trail. Facilities were excellent: spacious and clean showers, well-equipped; warm, well lit toilets. Warm welcome from the owner. Shop selling a good selection of food.

Local attractions

Access the walks and flat cycling of the Cuckoo Trail direct from the bottom of the farm, the old railway track between Heathfield and Polegate made into a safe and traffic-free 14-mile path. More walks of the highly scenic variety can be had among the spectacular coastal views of the famed white cliffs at the Seven Sisters Country Park and Beachy Head, or among the South Downs a few miles from the farm. You could also wander through Sussex flowers and wildlife in Friston Forest, or among the paths and scenery of Winnie the Pooh's Ashdown Forest, nearby in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and home of the bear with very little brain. The farm is a few miles from Eastbourne if you fancy a day on the beach, and less than 20 from the shops, shingle and nightlife of Brighton. Hastings, Battle and Tunbridge Wells are also within 20 miles. For kids, have a day out at Drusillas Park, aimed at ages two to 10; get them thoroughly tuckered out quad biking and more at Knockhatch Adventure Park, or get along to Blackstock Farm near Hailsham, with indoor and outdoor play areas, a farm shop and a café. Heaps of history is easy to get to too, like 15-century moated castle Herstmonceux Castle, also home of the famed astronomical Observatory Science Centre; and the former home of Rudyard Kipling at the National Trust's Batemans. The old village of Alfriston is a handsome place to stop for a pub lunch. For full-on culture, the world-famed Glyndebourne opera house, site of the annual Glyndebourne Festival Opera, is within easy driving distance.
