Located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and adults-only, stays at 1066 Eco Glamping add a few luxurious touches to East Sussex camping breaks. You can look forward to spacious bell tents with stylish decor and sustainably designed furniture including a proper double bed, as well as a whole load of peace and quiet. Activities around camp include yoga classes and mindfulness sessions, as well as outdoor film screenings under the cosy shelter of the marquee (both included in the price, just turn up). If you’re going down the self-catering route, stroll to the nearest farm shop (five minutes’ walk) to pick up goodies for the barbecue, groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables. If you need more wood to spark up the grill, you can buy bundles from the site owners. Want a change from cooking? Investigate the classic pubs in Pett village (five minutes’ drive) or head into seaside Hastings (15 minutes) to treat yourselves to anything from burgers to seafood. A shower block with flushing loos are close to hand, and at night the pitches are lit by solar power, so you can find your way safely back and forth.

Local attractions

What better place to start your High Weald explorations than in Hastings Country Park (accessed from the site)? Here you can wander ancient woodland and coastal trails with glorious sea views, and learn more about the local area at the eco-friendly Bale House visitor centre. Pannel Valley Reserve (15 minutes’ drive) is another secluded spot for nature walks, and keep your eyes peeled for wading birds in the ponds. Want to brush up on your local history? Have a potter around the stately ruins of Battle Abbey (20 minutes) and then follow the way-marked trail around the battlefield itself. At National Trust-owned, moated Bodiam Castle (30 minutes), you can take a self-guided tour to see how medieval aristocrats once lived. Coming briskly up to date, Hastings is both a foodie destination and a seaside town – combine the two to munch on fish and chips on the pier (both 15 minutes), or take a stroll along the beach. Say ‘hi’ to the sharks in the Bluereef Aquarium, and then take a turn on the Hastings Big Wheel (both 10 minutes) for views out across the English Channel.
