  • No-frills pet-friendly pop-up site on a semi-rural working farm
  • Half an hour’s drive from Eastbourne and 40 minutes from Hastings
  • Small firepits permitted; logs and kindling available; pubs nearby
Get set for a back-to-nature styled stay at Commanche Camping, where adventure is never too far away. No frills and plenty of thrills (a nearby adventure park, leisure centre and seaside resort town come to mind) or chills (lazy days and the like on site) are to be expected from this East Sussex place. This no-frills pet-friendly and family-friendly pop-up site is part of a semi-rural and family-run working farm, half an hour’s drive away from Eastbourne and 40 minutes from Hastings. You’ll get to pick your preferred spot here, and soon get a small firepit on the go. If you want an easy way to get it started, the site supplies log and kindling for a small cost. Your pet can join you at the site too, as long as they’re kept on a leash at all times due to livestock on site. Of course, what’s a stay without some tasty food? Fill up on some treats in Heathfield, a market town 10 minutes’ drive away with shops, boutiques and supermarkets. Or call into Hailsham, a town 10 minutes’ drive away with cafés, shops, supermarkets and the likes. There are some splendid country pubs within a couple miles of the site too, all with a warm atmosphere. The closest food shops, like the pubs, are within around five minutes’ drive of the site. When it comes to facilities back at base, though, you’ll have the convenience of hot water showers and toilets.

Local attractions

Sweet views, fresh air and more than one great beach are to be expected on the East Sussex coast. Launch a sea kayak, paddleboard or other watersports rental from one of the closest spots, Eastbourne (half an hour’s drive), or stick around the19th-century pier and art museum back on dry land. Beachy Head (35 minutes) is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, so well worth the visit. Other options for a dose of sea air (and a few sightseeing spots) include Brighton (50 minutes), with its busy beachfront and aquarium, or Hastings (40 minutes) with its old town, cliff railway and country park. Those of you who have kids joining you on your adventure may want to make the most out of the petting farm and owl sanctuary at Knockhatch Adventure Park (15 minutes’ drive), or let the kids do what kids do on the waterslides, rowing lake and soft play areas. The local leisure centre (15 minutes) also has soft play, bowling, a gym, swimming pool and café. For something rather more historic, head to Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes), a cool moated 15th-century brick castle.

Liked: For a not so seasoned camper, we absolutely loved it!
So much space on site, the animals were a great bonus as the kids helped feed the rabbits.
All in all great weekend!
The owners Claire and Amus were absolutely lovely, and couldn’t help us enough!
We were very lucky with the weather also (bonus)
