  • Family-friendly East Sussex pop-up five minutes’ drive from Hailsham
  • Knockhatch Adventure Park five minutes’ drive; Eastbourne 15 minutes
  • Communal barbecue area and a small basics shop; pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Set in East Sussex countryside edging the South Downs National Park, Arlington Campsite is a welcoming and family-friendly pop-up site with grass pitches on a flat, open field with bags of space for the kids to run around and just enjoy being kids. Run by Andy and Rowena, the site offers spotless unisex toilets and hot showers, a washing-up area and a communal barbecue zone where guests can gather and cook together. The small on-site shop stocks local produce and essential camping items, and has a fridge for your perishables plus a freezer for ice packs. Firepits and barbecues can be hired, with logs and charcoal also available to purchase. Dogs are welcome on site (exercise them in the woodland surrounding the pitches), and if you’re keen for a pint, there are several great pubs within 10 minutes’ drive. The market town of Hailsham (five minutes’ drive) has supermarkets, cafés, chemists and a community-run cinema (handy if you’re confronted with the odd rainy day) as well as a swimming pool and gym.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Rowena and Andy were very welcoming, and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. In fact you could just turn up at one of their tents with kitchen tent and have all you need. The shower & toilet facilities were immaculate and well stocked. And the wash-up area had all you need.

Local attractions

Arlington Speedway Stadium (five minutes’ walk) hosts regular petrolhead events throughout July and August, and right next to the site is a place the kids will hopefully love; Knockhatch Adventure Park (five minutes’ drive) offers go-kart rides, waterslides, raptor displays and animal encounters to keep little minds busy. Close by, you can pre-book for the family to learn to spin plates and juggle at the East Sussex School of Circus Arts (also five minutes). Abbots Wood (five minutes) has a network of scenic walking trails for all the family to stretch their legs. Arlington Reservoir (10 minutes) is another peaceful spot with waterside walks, and nearby you’ll find access to The Cuckoo Trail – a popular cycling route connecting the lively town of Heathfield with Eastbourne (both 15 minutes) on the south coast. For a classic British seaside experience, Eastbourne has a sandy beach, amusement arcades and fish and chIp shops. Just along the A27 from the site is the village of Wilmington (10 minutes), from which you can clamber up to the mysterious chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, possibly dating from around the 16th or 17th centuries and with views across the undulating South Downs.
