  • Secluded countryside retreat in the East Sussex countryside
  • A mile and a half from Battle; 20 minutes' drive to Hastings beach
  • Single wooden cabin set in two acres of rural land in 1066 Country
On the lookout for a secluded and cosy retreat in the East Sussex countryside? Make tracks to Mill Farm, home to just one wooden cabin set among two acres of rural land. Located about a mile and a half from the historic settlement of Battle, where William the Conqueror won in 1066, this is an excellent location for walks, castles and access to beaches, fishing, kayaking and more. Battle station is about a 10-minute drive away and connects the site with the capital (about an hour and a quarter away by train). With plenty of green space and a lot of privacy, this is a top pick for guests in search of that back-to-nature feel (although, as you'll see, there are plenty of creature comforts included too). Those convenient touches include a well-equipped kitchen area with an electric hob and oven, fridge-freezer, washing machine, kettle and toaster; pans, crockery, cutlery and utensils are included, including those all-important wine glasses and a cafetière. Cooking outside? A firepit, barbecue grill and picnic chairs are provided, so you can eat outdoors on the veranda while gazing up at the stars. After a long day of exploring, you can also treat yourself a hot shower before crawling into the kingsize bed (or the equally comfy other beds, in the case of extra guests).

Local attractions

Mill Farm is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with spectacular places to walk all around. Five minutes by car is all it takes to get to Battle Great Woods, which is also a top spot for cycling. Alternatively, you can follow footpaths from site into the village, passing fields full of sheep and cattle along the way. Battle Abbey (five minutes' drive), where the Battle of Hastings was fought, should be next on the agenda, alongside other historic spots like Bodiam Castle (15 minutes) or Herstmonceux (20 minutes). Afterwards, treat yourself to a traditional cream tea at one of the coffee houses on Battle high street (five minutes), or sample local craft ales at nearby Battle Brewery (five minutes). Plenty of beaches are also within easy reach by car, whether you fancy a traditional bucket-and-spade day at Hastings (20 minutes) or a stroll along the seafront at Bexhill-on-Sea (15 minutes); for those happy to travel slightly further afield, there are the golden dunes of Camber Sands (35 minutes) too.
