  • Rural campsite in Lancashire's ancient Forest of Bowland
  • A 10-minute drive from Longridge and Chipping
  • View fells & valleys Dark Skies & Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
What would you say to a stay in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Free from the sound, light and air pollution of the city, the ancient Forest of Bowland in Lancashire is a top candidate for quiet getaways, and Higher Mosserley is surrounded by just such peaceful countryside near the forest's southern edge. Set among country lanes and far-reaching views over the surrounding area's fells and valleys, this family-friendly site is in a secluded spot, two miles from the nearest B road and about a 10-minute drive from Longridge and Chipping (the latter is said to be one of the prettiest villages in Lancashire, so make sure to take a look). The bunding around the farm also creates a safe haven for wildlife, with curlews and tawny owls among the species you might spot. The ascent to the pitches is a moderate gradient accessible by most vehicles, so if you own a larger unit, the owners are always on-hand to help you with the set-up of your pitch. The facilities at Higher Mosserley are simple, with just a toilet block, but well-behaved dogs and properly supervised barbecues are allowed. Time your evening meal with the sunset and then stick around to enjoy the stars, which are particularly impressive in this recognised dark skies area. This is a quiet site with no noise between the hours of 10pm and 8pm, so there are no large groups and no loud music permitted. Guests are requested to respect the families around them, especially those with young children. For pubs, shops and supermarkets, head to Longbridge; there is also a farm shop and garden centre on the way (five minutes). As an alternative, Chipping has two great pubs and a couple of cafés.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Peaceful little site with great views. Conveniently located near Beacon Fell country park and shops in the nearby villages. Owners were very friendly and made sure we were settled in.

Disliked: No showers so I wouldn't stay more than a long weekend but this is clearly advertised on the listing.

Liked: Toilets are very clean, rubbish disposal on site, extremely friendly owners

Disliked: Limited pitch space on flat/level ground, no drinking water, very small uneven patch of land

From the manager: Hello Interesting feedback, contrasting to our actual discussions though. However, the outdoor open countryside, without onsite clubs, playground or planned activities, is not for everyone. We don't claim to be a large site, that is why we have so few pitches. The land is actually over 2 acres, which we think is large for a small campsite. Your tent was the largest tent this weekend with only a couple of other much smaller units, I'm sorry I didn't realise you were struggling for space. On the several occasions we chatted things through, there was no mention of the detail you make here. Especially when I offered to carry over your friends' stay for another time, who were unable to stay due to illness. As described we are a small, simple quiet, site and with very limited Wifi. In the middle of nowhere, in a 'Dark Skies Area' within an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. All of these features are mentioned in the detail on the Pitchup listing I hope you next camping experienc,e better, suites your needs and you are able to have a more pleasant stay. Thank you for your comments though. Regards Julie and Steve

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We were greeted by the lovely owners and made to feel so welcome! When shown to the pitch, we were initially concerned about the mid/hills due to other reviews, but even in our tiny car, we had no problems. Owners clearly know what they are doing :) We took them up on the offer of hiring a camp fire which was well worth it. The toilet facilities are also a 9/10 according to my teenage sister (who believe me, is hard to please!!) Beautiful view in a tranquil setting that is completely affordable!

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

The centre of the United Kingdom is said to be at Dunsop Bridge, a pretty village 20 minutes' drive to the north. On your way there, you'll pass Bowland Wild Boar Park (20 minutes), a fantastic family day out by the banks of the river Hodder. For open-air explores in the local area, you could head to Stonyhurst College (20 minutes), where JRR Tolkien once lived and worked, and set out on the Tolkien Trail through the gorgeous Ribble Valley. Alternatively, there are the dedicated cycling paths and café at Gisburn Forest (40 minutes) or shorter loops around Beacon Fell (10 minutes). Those interested in fishing, meanwhile, can get stuck in at Barnsfold Fishery (five minutes), a well-liked angling spot just up the road that specialises in trout. A day out in the historic city of Lancaster (40 minutes) should be next on the agenda if you're staying for more than just a few days – make sure to see the castle and its dungeon, which held the famous Pendle witches before their trial. A little further up the M6 brings you to the coast at Morecambe (45 minutes) or the South Lakes (it’s an hour to the southern tip of Windermere), which can often be glimpsed from the top of nearby Beacon Fell on clear days.
