  • Well-maintained Lancashire farm site 10 minutes' drive from Ormskirk
  • A 15-minute drive to Southport; 40 minutes to central Liverpool
  • Five minutes' walk from the canal; two pubs within walking distance
A countryside site, but one that’s also not far from the seaside and the city… that’s the rather fine Lancashire location of Martin Lane Farm, a traditional farm about 10 minutes’ drive from Ormskirk. This is a great spot for nature lovers, who can stroll to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in about five minutes for a bit of wildlife spotting. And it’s an equally good spot for beer lovers, because a 20-minute canalside wander in either direction will land you at one of the local pubs for a waterside pint and bite to eat. There are plenty of days out to be had around this area, too – particularly along the nearby stretch of coastline. It’ll take you about 15 minutes to drive to Southport (for the beach, pier and funfair), 25 minutes to get to Formby or half an hour to Crosby. For a change of scenery, it’s a 40-minute drive to Liverpool’s excellent shopping, museums and cultural attractions. Back at the farm it’s a classic camping experience that permits campfires and barbecues (ideally piled with produce from Ormskirk market or the local farm shops) and welcomes kids and dogs to its spacious pitches. There’s a decent-sized toilet block, and a tree-lined picnic area where you can serve up your alfresco meals (under pretty lighting if it was dark by the time you got the barbecue up to heat…)

Liked: Great location with easy walking along the canal. Friendly owners who were happy to change our hook-up booking to a tent pitch with more space. Campfires permitted.

Disliked: Not dislike exactly, but facilities are very basic and hook up pitches appeared quite close together.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Small site which is quiet day and night with plenty of space between pitches. Choose your own pitch on arrival. Trees line the perimeter of the site for shade on sunny days. Toilet facilities are good and there is a wash up sink.

Disliked: The campsite shower facilities could be better
