Our campsite

  • Quiet campsite in rural Lancashire for adults only
  • A mile from Chorley town centre; Go Ape Rivington 10 minutes' drive
  • Dog-friendly pitches beneath Healy Nab; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Primrose Cottage Camping – a sweet-smelling name indeed, with spectacular countryside views to match. Set amid grassy fields, woodlands and streams in the lovely Lancashire countryside, this site is an excellent spot for back to basics camping in a low-key setting – and as an adults-only site, it does not accept children. Located beneath Healy Nab and next to Blackbrook stream, the site is hidden away in the local countryside. Flat walks along both footpaths and canals are available a few hundred yards from the site gates, making it a cinch to get out there and explore Lancashire's best scenic spots and wildlife havens… Strolling through the local landscape is, of course, an activity you can get up to with your dog if you've brought one along – Primrose Cottage Camping has pet-friendly rules, with polite four-legged friends welcome here all year round. In fact, all guests at this quiet site are asked to be polite and keep any music at a low level for the benefit of everyone around. Chorley town centre is a mile away, although with the rural views here you wouldn't know it. The closest pub is 10 minutes' walk away, and are plenty more pubs, shops and cafés in town within easy reach either on foot (20 minutes' walk) or by car (five minutes' drive). There's also good access to the speedy M61 for long-distance drives to the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, both of which can be reached within an hour.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I was only able to stay for one night but would have loved to had time to stay longer on this peaceful country campsite.
The tents were spaced a good distance from each other, which as a solo female gave me the privacy and calmness I was seeking.
I was given a friendly welcome by the owner and felt if I needed anything they were at hand to help.
The entrance to the campsite is gated and I felt comfortable and secure which is important to me camping alone.
Definitely recommend for a quiet relaxing stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site was well kept and had good toilet and water facilities.
While there was some traffic noise from the motorway, it was not too disturbing.
The site was also quite from 10pm as large parties are not allowed l, which meant we got a good night's sleep!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Excellent relaxing break. Non regimented site in a beautiful setting. Lovely friendly owners who messaged with directions and were happy to help with any questions etc. Nice walks directly from the site but still close to Chorley. Toilet block basic but always kept clean. Nice fire pit. Lots of space and site quiet and relaxing.

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: EVERYTHING!
Such a peaceful and relaxed campsite. Very friendly and welcoming. Not crowded. Plenty of space for everyone. Lots of room between tents so nice and private.
Stunning countryside and short walk to pub and shops. Short drive to B&M and Aldi for any camping bits you've forgotten!
We also used local driving range which was an 8 minute drive away.
On site toilets so clean and ideally situated in corner of camping field. Cold running water but I just took a kettle of hot water to wash my face. Toilet roll, hand soap and paper hand towels provided. There's also a full length mirror in there which I found helpful.
Hose pipe and cold water tap by toilet block too.
Dogs welcome but kept on leads so you barely know they are there.
All you can hear is the birds.
Lovely sunny position. Sun in field all day. Can watch the sun rise and sun set.
Can park car next to tent which means you can store things in your car to leave extra room in your tent.
We have had the most chilled and relaxed weekend and will definitely be returning.

Disliked: Can't think of one thing!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Nice flat field with views, plenty of room; only a few other tents/vans on the field. I had a lot to sort with my new van so could do this without feeling uncomfortable - on the whole. Owners came and introduced themselves and asked if I wanted any firewood which is very handy. Slept marvelously, very peaceful site.

Disliked: I'm going to be honest here, I was very unhappy with how the owners made me feel and this sadly did put downer on my stay. When they rode over on their mower buggy to check me in, the lady looked visibly shocked and both rather appalled when I said I was on my own. I didn't need to be made to feel that way as a solo female camper. Their reaction made me feel SO uncomfortable, and sadly did put a cloud over the remainder of my time there and from this brief interaction I decided I wouldn't be returning. Also as I packed down on the last day, the male owner on his buggy, while appearing to mow the grass verge alongside the field, kept watching me while I was packing up my tent. Again I felt very uncomfortable and don't think any solo female camper should have to put up with this attitude. Also the motorway gets VERY noisy at night due to an interesting phenomena called sound inversion. Ear plugs will help you sleep.

From the manager: Hi Nichola,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review — we’re really glad to hear you slept marvellously and enjoyed the peace and quiet of our site.

We’re truly sorry you felt uncomfortable at any point during your stay. Please let me reassure you that there was absolutely no intention to cause unease. The grass was being cut simply as part of the regular site maintenance, and nothing more — certainly not to observe or intrude on any guest’s privacy.

We regularly host solo travellers, many of whom are women, and we take great pride in the welcoming, peaceful, and safe environment we’ve created here. As a solo female camper myself, I understand how important that sense of safety and ease is, and it’s something we genuinely prioritise. Many of our solo guests return time and again and speak highly of the comfort and respect they experience here.

Your feedback matters to us, and we’ll always do everything we can to ensure every guest feels relaxed, safe, and completely at home.
