Pitches

General

  • Within the grounds of a pub at the edge of the Lake District
  • A 10-minute drive from Kendal and 20 from Lake Windermere
  • Bar, restaurant and play area; takeaway breakfast available

Pull up a pew at The Station Inn and reward yourself with a pint after loping around the Lake District – this site is part of a pub placed on the edge of the national park, so it’s a convenient spot for checking out all that Cumbria has to offer.

A 10-minute drive from Kendal’s town centre, 20 minutes from Lake Windermere and the Yorkshire Dales, and half an hour from the Forest of Bowland, this simple pub site really is in a nifty position (it's particularly popular with folk tackling the coast to coast cycle route).

Whether you’re in the area to amble around fells, take steamer trips across lakes, gaze at waterfalls or totter around teeny art galleries, all of the above is possible. Adventures are a breeze to organise too as tour operators in and around Kendal are on hand to take you hiking, rock climbing, cycling and canyoning in the surrounding countryside.

Head back to base after days out for home-cooked dinners from the bistro-style menu in the restaurant, beers and wines in the bar or the outdoor seating area, and a chance for the kids to scamper around the huge play area until the no-noise policy kicks in at 10:30pm. The pub (in a farmhouse dating from the turn of the century) is open from noon, but a takeaway breakfast is available earlier on and the toilets open up for an hour in the mornings.

A supermarket is less than five minutes’ drive away for grabbing the essentials.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

The site doesn't have a toilet block, but customers can use the pub toilets between 8am and 9pm.

The gentleman who showed us around was very lovely and gave us some pointers in the area and where nearest supermarket is. (ASDA 5 min drive)
Toilets were clean and loved that there was a toilet outside too for when the pub closed.

    Disliked:

We were shown our pitch, which we were happy with as it was on the end and the grass was nearby to put pegs in. Which was great.
We went out for the day and when we returned someone was in our pitch. We didn’t want to be fussy as this our first time we weren’t sure if it was a “first come first serve”/“lose your seat” kind of thing. So when we put our awning up it was annoying (esp having to pay £2 extra for one). It was too hard to put he pegs in the ground as there was gravel (not entirely something to complain about but just thought would mention for others.

When asked about takeout menu , we got told to look on the facebook page which was fine. The Friday night we ordered pizza which were nice but one was burnt. We decided to book in the restaurant for the Saturday after looking that kids are free before 4 as per the facebook page, after we had eaten and the food was so so. The bill came full price and when questioned she said that was an old advert, so i found it on the page and it was there but 3 years out of date, we just saw the September offers. The woman was not very pleasant at all and never even apologised for the misunderstanding. Put a big damper for rest of the weekend.

From the manager...

We apologise for the the misunderstanding about the Facebook page, but after looking at this you would have had to scroll down nearly 3 years worth of content to find this offer and then it had a date on it .

If staying for longer than one night then the pub is the best place to eat. We didn’t get to sample their food as we arrived late and left early next morning . But we drove into town and had the best Chinese take away I’ve had in years.

Lovely basic sheltered campsite. Thoroughly enjoyed our very wet September stay there. Big playground to loose the children in - but camping pitches surround the playpark so very easy to keep an eye on the children while you cook tea etc. Kids enjoyed seeing the alpacas. Public toilets are available in the pub 7am-11pm. Fresh running water. Easily accessible for the lakes. Oxenholme station is literally 10minute walk with links straight into windermere and the north and south. Good views of the lake district in front of you and pennines behind you. Owners are lovely and very welcoming. Don't be put off by the pub, its a quiet well controlled local that sells lovely food. We stayed thursday, friday & saturday night and although these nights are usually very busy, the boozers were quiet and very happy people. We did had one night of very rowdy camping neighbours (not owners fault). One complaint to the owner and the next night was spot on! Dealt with professionally and courteously! Can't fault this place really - Its a new campsite with a very promising future - we would visit again. Family of 2 adults and 3 children.

    Disliked:

Although the pub is beautiful, indoor toilets is immaculate. The one negative I can say is that sometimes the port-a-loos (used only overnight) were dirty and smelly. Honestly though we went indoors most of the time.

Local attractions

Kendal (known as the southern gateway to the Lake District) is your best bet for activities when the weather isn’t up to much – the town has two castles, a handful of museums, a brewery offering tours, and a leisure centre with a pool.

If the outdoors is where you want to be, go waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing or fishing on Lake Windermere with the help of Low Wood Bay Watersports (half an hour's drive), or stay closer by with family-friendly forays around Lakeland Maze Farm Park (five minutes).

Craving the coast? Meander across Morecambe Bay beach (30 minutes) in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stopping off enroute at Lakeland Wildlife Oasis (20 minutes) to see the snow leopards as well as more than 100 species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and undersea creatures.

Rather admire architecture? Stroll around the stately Sizergh Castle (10 minutes), then check out the lush gardens and mansion of Levens Hall (15 minutes).

To top off the trip, a ride on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (half an hour) lets you see some stunning scenery without having to give the legs too much of a workout.
