Camping pods
Summer sun with the pennines as a beautiful backdrop
Views
Number 7 pod with it's very own hot tub. the fairy lights at night add that romantic touch.

  • Off-grid camping pods in a rural spot with gorgeous Solway Firth views
  • Five minutes’ drive to North Lakeland fells; 30 minutes to Keswick
  • Well-equipped pods with stoves; shared spa hot tub and LPG showers
On the northern fringes of the Lake District National Park, Cherry Trees Farm Campsite offers a couple of wooden camping pods with spectacular views over the Solway coast and the North Lakeland fells. This is a fab base for anyone wanting to explore the peaceful and beautiful county of Cumbria on foot or by bike. Surprisingly, considering its remote vibe, Cherry Trees is only 15 minutes’ drive from the M6, and the historic villages of Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket (both 10 minutes) are packed with pubs and village stores to keep you fed and watered. Although the location is very rural, there’s masses and masses to do hereabouts, from walking the fells to wild swimming on the Solway Firth (35 minutes), horse riding and golf. If you want to up the pace, there are ziplines at Honister Slate Mine (50 minutes), and if the weather turns, sporty types can stay active at swimming pools and leisure centres (both 20 minutes). Back at base, the natty wooden pods are sited on the edge of a traditional hay meadow, and each is fully equipped to sleep two people – all bedding, towels, crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils are provided so you don't have to bother bringing everything from home. Facilities include your own LPG-fired shower and compostable loo, a small kitchen area with a gas stove and a sink with hot and cold running water. On top of that, a major-league bonus is the use of a private hot tub included in the price of each pod – there's no better way to relax after a day out on the fells.

What customers say

Cherry Tree Farm offers a peaceful rural escape with stunning views. Guests praise the friendly, helpful owner, Alan, and clean, well-maintained facilities. While amenities are basic and it can get muddy, the campsite is praised for spacious pitches, value, and a relaxing atmosphere. Popular for quiet, back-to-basics camping with helpful hosts.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Nichts

From the manager: I think the most disappointing thing about this review is that it was ever allowed to be published in the first place given the inaccuracies and untruths within it. Pitchup had no interest in investigating the comments made in the review and their online dispute form simply doesn't allow you to submit a reasoned defense due to the very limited number of characters on the form. So it is seemingly down to me to respond in a public forum.
The review was left by an elderly solo German motorcyclist on a tour of Britain. For anyone interested that can't be arsed to translate the review the highlights of it are:
*It is the worst site that he had stayed on during his trip and the cost of £20 per night was ridiculous.
*The washroom consisted of a container and a portable toilet.
*There was no kitchen or common room!!, nothing, not even a place to charge his phone.
*He found a dead rat outside the washroom on his first day so he left early.
So, to address the first two points, our pitch fees of £20 per night for 2 people are probably among the lowest in the Lake District and surrounding areas and these reflect the basic nature of our facilities. We are also a certificated site operated under an exemption certificate issued by Freedom camping, this means we don't require planning permission but we must adhere to Freedom Campings strict rules and regulations, one of their rules is that everything on site must be temporary and movable if required. Our principal shower and toilet block is a purpose built jack leg cabin which was a portable toilet block which we adapted to accommodate two lpg shower cubicles and added solar powered lights so it is now completely off grid. As well as the two gas showers, it contains three flushing toilets and three sinks with hot and cold water. During busy times the toilet block is checked and cleaned on average at least 4 times a day. So yes, our facilities are housed in a container if you like but for a site with 10 non electric grass pitches they surpass the minimum legal requirement by some distance and in general the comments I receive on this review forum and elsewhere are very positive.
In addition to the main toilet block we also have a hired portaloo, the reason for this being that the campsite is spread over two large fields and the better pitches are located in the field furthest from the main facilities. We added the portaloo as a convenience (no pun intended) so that people don't have to walk quite so far to get to a toilet. This is now serviced weekly by an outside contractor and cleaned daily by myself.
The third point is the lack of a kitchen or a common room (or anything else!!!) on site and there is nowhere to charge a mobile phone.
No, there isn't a common room or a kitchen and nowhere on the listing that contains 80 photographs does it say there is and I don't think I've heard of anyone else who has stayed here that expected to find these things on a small, budget campsite, they obviously do things differently in Germany!!
There is a washing up area with hot and cold water in a converted horse trailer.
There is a usb port on the solar battery in the toilet block where a phone can be charged and there is also a touring caravan near the house which is hooked up to mains electric and this can be used by campers on request for things such as charging appliances. All of this was explained to the gentleman in question on arrival but I think from the blank expression on his face his grasp of the English language was very limited.
Finally, the mysterious disappearing dead rat 🐀. I live here 365 days a year and I visit the toilet block numerous times in a day, including the days when the gentleman arrived and left and I spoke to him on both occasions and I have never seen a rat, dead or alive near the toilet block and I don't think he or anyone else has ever mentioned it, I searched the area on reading this review and like all the best murder mystery stories the body had mysteriously vanished. I would take any action necessary if required but for now this one remains a mystery, possibly a field mouse of which there are many living in the long grass.
To summarize, what people come here for isn't the common room, the kitchen, the 5 star facilities or the nightlife. They come for the open space, the amazing views, the peace and tranquility, the dark skies and just to be somewhere where they can get close to nature and chill out away from their everyday lives. And all for the extortionate fee of £20!!
Happy camping everyone (well maybe not everyone 😉)

Camping pod

Liked What an absolute little gem of a site! We had a fantastic night's stay in one of the cabins for my 30th birthday. Alan was kind enough to leave us a bottle of bubbly in the fridge and was super helpful making sure everything was ready for our stay. The cabins are lovely and cozy, there's an electric heater provided and power points available. Nice comfy bed, linens & towels provided. There is also an external shed right by the cabin housing a small kitchen, shower & toilet. Gorgeous view from the cabin, belting sunset (even despite the rain we had!) and a great spot for stargazing. Unfortunately the weather wasn't on our side this time but it didn't dampen our time or stop us enjoying the hot tub! Incredible value for money without compromise on hospitality. Thanks again Alan for a lovely little getaway, we will certainly be back soon 🥰
