Campervan pitch

  • Remote Cumbria woodland retreat 20 minutes' drive from Penrith
  • A 15-minute drive from Brougham Castle and 20 minutes from Ullswater
  • Communal firepit on site; half-hour walk to village pub
Picturing yourself whiling away a few days in a secluded forested hideaway? Howdy Glamping and Campsite is a peaceful site where you can do just that. Since being planted around 20 years ago, this gorgeous woodland has become a haven for all sorts of wildlife – and now guests can spend the night here in order to appreciate this special place at their leisure at all times of day. The amenities available here vary depending on the type of accommodation you opt for, but all guests have access to toilet and shower facilities (a two-minute walk away from the pitches). There's also a communal firepit for evenings out in the open air with family and friends. Keen walkers have several trails to explore locally, along with a whole network of paths lacing the hills in Lake District National Park (15 minutes’ drive) and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour). The site is on the edge of Great Strickland, the centre of which can be reached via a five-minute drive, or a half-hour walk along a country lane or through the fields. The village is home to a pub (with a beer garden) that serves traditional food, real ales and a selection of gins. This establishment claims to be the friendliest pub in the Eden Valley, so make sure to go down and experience their warm hospitality for yourself. For more drinking and dining options (plus shops and supermarkets), head to the market town of Penrith (20 minutes).

What customers say

A peaceful, friendly campsite with a chill vibe and lovely scenery. Praised for its welcoming owners, clean facilities (kitchen, microwave, fridge), and fire pits. Great for a quiet getaway with nature access. Excellent value, though a few noted minor shower temp issues and overgrown plants. Owners addressed dryer concerns.

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite

Liked A lovely, quirky, relaxed and natural campsite..doesn't feel quite right to describe it as a campsite, more a tucked away little corner of a wild garden. So peaceful, lots of birdsong. Delightful.

Disliked We only stayed one night!

Liked Informal site in beautiful location. I had a lovely pitch next to beautiful grassy area with picnic tables. I liked the fact that there was a microwave available which was very useful.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We stayed here for two nights (Friday-Sunday), arriving to a lovely little field where you could pitch your tent wherever you fancied. Lovely welcome from Andri (owner) & their gorgeous dog too! Fire pits are provided too, which is great!

There are 2 outbuildings here with amenities - one cabin with a fridge & a sink for washing up. Then another with two toilets, shower, fridge, washer, dryer, hair dryer, sink & even a little sofa.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here & to not be short of anything we needed, to feel welcome & looked after - we would definitely recommend to anyone looking to camp in the area!

Disliked The shower was either cold or scalding hot with no in-between. Wasn’t that big of an issue as we only stayed for two nights.

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite

Liked I really enjoyed my pitstop at Howdy. The campsite is very nicely laid out and the available facilities are excellent. The shower and toilet was clean and a small common room is provided to allow phone charging, access to a microwave, and a fridge freezer. I was fortunate to enjoy the panoramic views from the campsite on a lovely sunny evening. The glamping looks fabulous - I will most definitely visit again!

Disliked Not much to dislike really! I had stopped off enroute to a wedding in Scotland so didn’t explore the local area. I didn’t use the wifi so can’t comment on that.

Local attractions

The ruins of 13th-century Brougham Castle (15 minutes’ drive) occupy a pretty spot on the banks of the River Eamont and have far-reaching views of the Eden Valley. An elegant and imposing façade is all that remains of Lowther Castle (15 minutes), built in the early 1800s. The gardens here include landscaped areas, wildflower meadows and woodland, as well as an adventure playground. Independent shops and cafés line the cobbled streets of the historic town of Penrith (20 minutes). The remains of a medieval fortress overlook Castle Park, where you can stroll among rose gardens or have a picnic on the lawn while the children let off some steam in the playground. Ullswater (20 minutes) is the second-largest lake in the Lake District. Explore its wooded banks on foot (there’s a spectacular trail following the eastern shore, from Howtown to Glenridding), hop on a cruise or hire a canoe or paddleboard from any of the waterfront outfits.
