  • Bassenthwaite Lake 15 minutes’ drive; Grasmere 40 minutes
  • Luxury accommodation with a dog park, herb garden and tourist info
In search of somewhere family-friendly to hunker down while you explore the northern Lake District? If you’re after some creature comforts and a dollop of spectacular views too, then step forward Skiddaw View Holiday Park. This Cumbria hotspot is on the outskirts of Bassenthwaite, 20 minutes’ drive from Keswick and another world away in terms of peace and quiet. The 20-acre landscaped holiday park is tucked into a hillside, with vistas stretching to Skiddaw and the northern fells. Trees and shrubs have been carefully planted to give you extra privacy in your spacious holiday home, where luxuries include well-equipped kitchens with all mod cons for cooking family meals. Light-flooded lounges have flat-screen TVs and plenty of cosy sofas for leisurely nights in, and double bedrooms come with ensuite shower rooms. Thoughtful touches for your pets include a welcome basket, an agility course and a dedicated dog-walking meadow with rather special views to Solway Firth. Any equally thoughtful touches for humans? Well, yes. Pep up your meals with pick-your-own herbs from the Butterfly and Herb Garden, while the laundry room doubles as a tourist info centre, so you can plan your next day out while you’re waiting for clothes to dry.

Liked: Clean spacious lodge for 2 people on a nice quiet site! Great if you’re wanting a peaceful break away! Good cooking facilities in the lodge! And a nice big TV! If you take a dog there’s a small / cute dog agility run and there was never other dogs there when we went so leaving us to it! There was also a man made gravel path to walk your dog around a little wooded area with some open views and again quiet

Disliked: Didn’t dislike this too much but your a drive away to shops or a local pub! But if you’re happy to travel by car there is a pub about 5 min drive away and Cockermouth 15 min drive! We liked to cook in the lodge most nights anyway! Said there was a shop and a laundry on the site but could not find this! But it’s a good sight for just leaving you too it! We could never get on the site Wi-Fi to watch Netflix etc, so had to hover off our phone - luckily we have unlimited data!!! But not everyone will I guess

Liked: Peaceful and scenic location, clean and comfortable caravan. Our toddler was happy to have a nice playground just a few meters away from the caravan.

Disliked: WiFi was somewhat slow.

Local attractions

Those of you who fancy a decent walk can circumnavigate Bassenthwaite Lake (15 minutes’ drive) or stride across the fells in the Underskiddaw hiking area (40 minutes). If you’re not feeling quite so energetic – or you’ve got youngsters in tow – it’s a short amble across a field to Castlerigg Stone Circle (20 minutes) to see the 5,000-year-old standing stones and views back to Skiddaw. If the kids are yearning for animals to cuddle, it’s time to head straight to the Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) to feed the alpacas and listen to keeper talks about otters, red pandas or meerkats. There are more interactive antics to be had at Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (half an hour), where you can get up close with owls and hawks, and watch them fly. The holiday park is also close to popular Lake District National Park destinations such as Grasmere (40 minutes), site of Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, as well as Ambleside (50 minutes), gateway to Lake Windermere boat trips.
