At a peaceful countryside location with outstanding views over Morecambe Bay, Low Fell Gate Farm Campsite is a back-to-basics spot for those of you who like to get off grid but remain reassuringly close to civilisation. There’s easy access from the M6 at Junction 36, and you’re only a five-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands railway station. You can walk into Grange-over-Sands in 15 minutes, to source bits and bobs for the barbecue, try out the local pubs and then clear your head by walking along the seafront promenade. The pretty medieval village of Cartmel has indie food shops to nose around and a micro-brewery, as well as a handful of restaurants and takeaways. Drive north towards the Lakes and you’re at Windermere in 20 minutes, for all sorts of water-based activities from sailing to paddleboarding and canoeing. Don’t want to get wet? You can also cross the lake on an old-world cruiser, explore cutesy waterfront villages like Bowness and Ambleside, or get up into the hills for some healthy hiking. Back at site, simple facilities include running water for washing up, and portable toilets. This is a working farm, so while your pet pooches are welcome too, please keep them on a lead and under control at all times. It's also a peaceful place, so there's a no-noise rule in place after 10pm.

Liked View over Morcambe Bay, toilets were spotless even though they were portaloos

Disliked On a steep hill ground (grass) very unkept very long in places not raked which walked into van. Never saw owner except for when she came for money who tried to charge more than what was owed. Left a day early as heavy rain made the ground very boggy & was scared to get stuck on field

Liked The view was excellent, the toilets were spotless

Disliked No water tap on site,it's down a steep hill to caravan park. The field was a bit unkempt,loose cut grass everywhere (which ended up in van) We had rain and the field became very boggy very quicky and we became very worried of getting stuck and left a day early.The entrance is very tight and the field slopes. Won't be returning and wouldn't recommend!

Liked Nice location and price with good access to the local high street and a beautiful view from the field. Pitch was level, but on a slight hill so you need to park up the right angle.

Disliked Stated that there was a water point and wash facilities for doing washing up/cleaning. There was a water point but not in the field we were camped in, it was 5 minutes down the road at the static caravan park instead of in the field which we thought it would be.

Liked Lovely, peaceful site with incredible view over the bay. Ground was in good condition - some of it was sloping but plenty of flat spots suitable for roof tent etc. Basic but clean and well maintained facilities (4 portaloos - all spotless, with a good paved step up so not muddy at all). Very laid back owner - called by to collect the balance but otherwise left us be.

Local attractions

Golfers can practise their swing on seafront links or a hilltop course (both five minutes’ drive) with Lakes views. Experienced riders might like the chance to hack across the fells on rare-breed Friesian horses (10 minutes), while horse-lovers of the betting kind can catch race meetings at Cartmel Racecourse. There’s plenty of beach walking on offer too, on the wide expanse of Morecambe Bay’s Silverdale Coast (30 minutes) or Blackstone Point (35 minutes), and you’ll come across salt marshes and woodland trails at Roudsea Wood and Mosses National Nature Reserve (15 minutes). For something a bit more vigorous, The Old Man of Coniston (45 minutes) is a challenging mountain hike rewarded with spectacular views across the Lake District. To up the cultural vibe, there are summer theatre evenings and guided tours at Holker Hall and Gardens (10 minutes), and Grasmere (50 minutes) has several Wordsworth-related attractions and 17th-century cottages owned by the National Trust.
