FSC Castle Head is a family-friendly site in the grounds of an environmental education centre in Cumbria, a five-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands (for shops, places to eat and a pub or two). You might guess that such a centre would set up in an area that’s interesting for nature-themed explores, and indeed you’d be correct – it’s just between the coast of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District National Park, so there’s plenty of scope for scenic walks and assorted other outdoorsy activities. Getting to your fix of nature should be fairly straightforward too – the site is about 20 minutes away from the M6 and about an hour and a half’s drive from both Manchester and Liverpool. Those travelling by public transport can get here via the train station a mile away in Grange-over-Sands. Pitches at Castle Head are set up in the gardens, either on the front lawn or overlooking the River Winster, which flows past the site. There’s a large pond on site and a meadow boardwalk – both excellent places to spot local wildlife, so don’t forget to bring the binoculars. Facilities on site include showers, toilets and free wifi, and there are picnic benches for your outdoor meals (plus a washing-up area to deal with the aftermath).
