General

  • Grass pitches in the grounds of an environmental education centre
  • A five-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands; 20 minutes from the M6
  • Between the Morecambe Bay coast and Lake District National Park

FSC Castle Head is a family-friendly site in the grounds of an environmental education centre in Cumbria, a five-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands (for shops, places to eat and a pub or two).

You might guess that such a centre would set up in an area that’s interesting for nature-themed explores, and indeed you’d be correct – it’s just between the coast of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District National Park, so there’s plenty of scope for scenic walks and assorted other outdoorsy activities.

Getting to your fix of nature should be fairly straightforward too – the site is about 20 minutes away from the M6 and about an hour and a half’s drive from both Manchester and Liverpool. Those travelling by public transport can get here via the train station a mile away in Grange-over-Sands.

Pitches at Castle Head are set up in the gardens, either on the front lawn or overlooking the River Winster, which flows past the site. There’s a large pond on site and a meadow boardwalk – both excellent places to spot local wildlife, so don’t forget to bring the binoculars. Facilities on site include showers, toilets and free wifi, and there are picnic benches for your outdoor meals (plus a washing-up area to deal with the aftermath).

No undercover wash up station. Toilet disgusting on arrival. Pitch extremely lumpy considering it was the front lawn of the house. Expensive for tent only pitch.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, Iwe are sorry that we did not meet your expectations. We take care of our lawns each week but nature plays a part in this, we have moles that like to undo our work and can cause lumpy pitches, if you have raised these points we would have tried our hardest to find you another pitch that you would have liked
.
All of our bathrooms are cleaned on departures, and before a new arrival. We leave cleaning equipment in each bathroom,in line with COVID requirements. if you had raised these concerns during your stay we would have allocated you another bathroom striaght away.

The wash up station is being looked at as part of of on going improvements,
We do provide free wifi, a secure place to lock bikes, and a takeaway service for breakfast, Our team would have helped in any way to make your visit better
Can you give help us to improve our facilities by letting us know your ideas of what you would have liked to have seen?
Again thank you for your review.

The facilities are significantly better than other campsites recently visited. Your own allocated indoor bathroom, Covid secure, along with excellent hot showers with good pressure. The pitches are generous and good quality. The location is picturesque and within good distance of towns. The manager is excellent, going out of her way to engage with campers and making sure they are ok. Also offer takeaway hot breakfast and beverages! Would deffo be back.
