Camping meadow backed by wooded hills
View of the camping field

  • Pop-up campsite on a farm five minutes’ drive from Alston in Cumbria
  • Set beside the South Tynedale Railway; Pennine Way five minutes’ walk
  • Spacious dog-friendly pitches; pubs and shops half an hour’s stroll
Surrounded by gorgeous views over wooded Cumbrian hills, Bottom Meadow Campsite sits on a family-run farm between the South Tyne and Gilderdale rivers. It’s five minutes’ yomp away from the Pennine Way, making a handy overnighting spot for long-distance hikers. There are picnic tables in the pop-up camping field – which has plenty of space for kids and any furry chums to chase each other around – and barbecues are permitted on site. After a long day in the bracing open air, you may not want to set about alfresco cooking, but luckily Bottom Meadow is only five minutes’ drive/half an hour’s stroll from shops and pubs in the walking hub of Alston. Occasional appearances are made by South Tynedale Railway steam engines, which run along a track edging the camping meadow – an impressive sight and added bonus for lovers of heritage trains. Please take note however – as this is pretty much a wild campsite, facilities are limited to a composting loo and running water for washing dishes (bring your own washing-up bowl). There is a toilet block with composting loos, a handwashing sink and a cold-water shower. There is no electricity on site, so make sure you pack a torch.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The location is outstanding, the scenery all around you is gorgeous and the animals around you makes the experiance even better! Recommend and worth it!

Disliked: When trying to contact the mobile numbers provided no one answered. No one welcomed us or was available if any help was required. There was a day we spent and literally no one was there around us. Cold water only and other places offer hot water and electric for around the same price range

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Really gorgeous spot. Big open field. Loads of room. No one feels even close to anyone else really. Lovely and laid back and an amazing bakery in town. Ashgill falls also gorgeous. (Also 4G if that’s handy).

Disliked: Can be loads of midges so bring some stuff! Great can have fires though. To keep ‘em off.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: It made my video interesting for viewers, the site that didn't exist

Disliked: Wasn't where the coordinates or map from pitch up said it was this took me to a road next to a river. Rang both mobile numbers supplied no answer even left message, stopped at nearest farm who knew of no campsite in area, went elsewhere to stay. £25 down the drain.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely relaxing, quiet site next to the river. Well maintained with plenty room for little ones to run around. Basic facilities but this is reflected in price. Will definitely return.

Disliked: Midges, but to be expected given the location. Just remember your midge deterrent.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely surroundings and very peaceful, especially with the sound of the river nearby. Nice and flat field allowing a good choice of places to pitchup. Shower and sink provided to clean yourself up (although cold water only). Bottled water available in shower room incase you run out of drinking water.

Disliked: Lots of midges later on in the evening. Toilets were a little smelly.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Owners were lovely! Picnic tables available in field for use. Plenty room. Beautiful views & very quiet!

Disliked: A field with 2 composting toilets, 1 shower (NO hot water!), 1 sink. That's your lot, so come prepared! Really basic & the cost does not reflect the amenities.

Local attractions

Railway buffs can jump on the South Tynedale Railway (five minutes’ drive) from the outskirts of Alston to chug under steam through the Cumbrian landscapes of fells and forested hills. Next to the station platform is The Hub Museum, stuffed liberally with vintage cars, bikes and motoring ephemera. The impressive hilltop remains of Epiacum Roman Fort (10 minutes, the highest Roman fort built in ancient Britain) are open for all to visit, but are on a private sheep farm so please keep any dogs under tight control. For more evidence of Roman occupation, walk along a section of Hadrian’s Wall (40 minutes) and visit the remains of Housesteads Roman Fort - Vercovicium (also 40 minutes), where there are spectacular views across Cumbria as well as a museum of Roman artefacts. Turn west and you’re soon in the Lake District; have a wander around the imposing facade of Lowther Castle and its woodland gardens (45 minutes), or stroll around the shores of fell-lined Ullswater from Pooley Bridge (also 45 minutes).
