  • Wild-style camping with amenities 10 minutes’ drive from Warkworth
  • Druridge Bay Country Park 20 minutes’ drive; Craster 25 minutes
  • Local produce; communal fridge; firepits for hire and wood for sale
Walkmill is a secluded and peaceful campsite encircled by the River Coquet. A tranquil site on a smallholding of over 8 acres set amongst idyllic woodland with wild flowers across the meadow in late spring to mid-summer offering an abundance of wildlife and nature. A haven for hares, you may also be lucky enough to see a deer or two as you drive down to the site. Our hideaway location offers an amazing dark skies experience. Our site is ‘wild camping’ with the benefit of limited clean facilities. One shower and two toilets in the onsite static caravan with two external toilets in our wooden huts (portable toilets are available to hire). The caravan acts as our reception area with visitor information, charging points, a communal fridge/freezer and a small onsite shop selling local produce. Firepits are available to hire with wood and Hotmax sold on site. Our site welcomes walkers following the Coastal Path or St. Oswald’s Way and cyclists, often following Cycle Route1. Please note there is no access from the campsite to the River Coquet. The riverbank that surrounds Walkmill is a Natural England SSSI and therefore a protected area due to the wildlife and wildflowers. Walkmill pathways do take you as close as possible to allow you to view, photograph and or video. It may be your day to see the Salmon jumping around or even spot the Otter or Kingfisher.

What customers say

Peaceful, eco-friendly site with spacious, natural riverside pitches, called a "posh wild campsite." Praised for friendly owners, clean facilities, and honesty shop. Great for a tranquil getaway, though shower availability can be limited. Good base for Northumberland.

Tent Strip primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Spacious pitch (6) lovely quiet setting, enjoyed the grass walk with my spaniel around the campsite & meadow. Well kept shack toilets with sanitizer. Handy static caravan with electricity for campers to use with fridge freezer which was very useful with staying for a week (non ehu) Small shop with bits and pieces & fridge with cold drinks, cheese, yogurts etc.. Shower was perfect in a bathroom. Lounge with power point (hairdryer) Information available for local area. Great uncrowded campsite with well spaced pitches with lovely views. Second visit & would love to visit again. Claire & Nick lovely & helpful.

Disliked One shower in the caravan but despite site being full never found it a problem if you time it right.

Top Circle primitive grass campsite

Liked Really lovely site The pitches are well spaced. Beautiful views. Very clean site. I loved the eco showers - very well designed and clean. The owner let us have 2 friends to visit until 9pm, without an extra charge.
Lovely and peaceful.

Disliked The cabin with the hot water facilities closes at 9pm so if you want to wash up after that time, you have to do so outside with no shelter, and only cold water is available.

Route directions

If you are following Google Maps, please drive through Warkworth with the castle on your left. Google Maps tries to take drivers down Watershaugh Road and across the ford, which is not suitable for motorhomes or caravans and, depending upon river levels, cars too. There is a footbridge to the right of the ford for cyclists and walkers which is accessible from a narrow footpath against the hedgerow (at the last bend before you drop down to the river).

Local attractions

The village of Warkworth is a sweet little place. While history buffs explore the ruins of the 13th-century hilltop castle and riverside hermitage, wildlife enthusiasts can go on a puffin-spotting cruise to Coquet Island. Of course, you might just prefer to take it easy on Warkworth beach, a vast sandy stretch that is also popular for watersports. The landscape of Druridge Bay Country Park (20 minutes' drive) includes a dune-fringed beach (dotted with World War II defences), a boating lake and woodlands. Active types flock here to cycle, paddleboard and surf, but there is also plenty of birdwatching to be done, with swans among the winged residents. The dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle (25 minutes) sit atop a promontory stretching into the North Sea. From there, take a 25-minutes coastal walk to the fishing village of Craster, where you can sample the local speciality: smoked kipper.
