  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome, and there’s a playground on site to entertain the latter. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

Liked location near to all of the coastal towns.

Disliked cigarette butts all around the tent pitch up area, the grass had them everywhere.
campers doing that are disgusting.
the site had not made any attempt to remove / clear up.
lots of litter also (no effort to clear up over the course of a week).
shower room in need of complete replacing. everything about is was either old, worn, broken and dirty. units, walls, vents, floor.
the name gives it away, you are directly next to a busy railway line that runs from very early and late in the night.

Liked Nice pub on site, with some lovely walks straight from the door. Very handy for a brewery I wanted to visit in walking distance. Toilets and showers were clean and kept clean. Nice private pitch which we were just allocated on arrival.

Disliked Not really the sites fault, but as usual a very few lazy dog owners allowing their dogs to do their business on other people's pitches especially when there was numerous signs telling you to keep your dog on it's leash at all times.
Only other negative was that there was never any loo roll in the toilets during the entire visit, just as well we had encountered this before so always carry some with us just in case!

Liked The site was well located. There is also plenty of space to set up camp with a picnic bench for each pitch.

Disliked The site itself seemed very dated and a bit run down. The playground was not in a good shape and my 8 year old even refused to play in it saying it felt unsafe. The showers were nice and warm, but the drains occasionally clogged.
We were not given any details about the site when we arrived and had to ask other campers for the codes for the toilet blocks.

Liked Easy access to A1 and surrounding area. Great spot for loads of great days out. Pitch was plenty big enough, picnic bench at pitch. Water point on pitch.

Disliked The kids play park is unsafe, screws coming through the bottom of the slide. Swings are not fixed in the ground properly so slightly unsafe. The male shower trays were blocked which meant you ended up submerged in filth coming back up the drain. Although we had a great time on our days out and the site served a purpose, it certainly wasn’t worth £40 per night.

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
