Hexham in one direction, Kielder Water in the other – and here, around halfway between the two, on the edge of Wark Forest, is Stonehaugh Campsite, a peaceful spot from which to explore Northumberland’s many attractions. It’s safe to say that this is a well located site, surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of the Northumberland National Park and within easy reach of both Hadrian’s Wall (20 minutes’ drive) and Newcastle (55 minutes). Closer to home, there’s gravel cycling in neighbouring Wark Forest, and access to lots of walking and cycling trails, including the Pennine Way and North Pennine Cycle Route (NCN 68). Local village Stonehaugh (pronounced Stone-hoff) was designed in the 1950s for Forestry Commission workers, but only 34 of the planned 250 houses were ever built. That means it’s not big enough to support a shop or pub, so it’s worth stocking up on supplies while passing through Hexham or Bellingham (both about 25 minutes). The site also has a small shop selling essentials – milk, pot noodles, biscuits and the like. Other facilities include a bathroom block (powered by a wind turbine and with solar-heated water), drinking water taps, a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area. There are picnic tables on site, and more at the nearby Warksburn picnic area (10 minutes’ walk), where you can have a paddle in the burn too. Also a short walk away are the village play area and the village hall, which has a social club that’s open in the evening on Friday and Saturday.

This quiet, eco-friendly park is in lovely, secluded countryside, perfect for exploring Northumberland. Guests consistently rave about the welcoming, helpful owners, roomy sites, and clean facilities (solar showers!). Enjoy the peace, dark skies for stargazing, and nearby trails. Midges are noted, and a few find the shower building a bit dated, but it works. Great value, relaxed getaway.

Liked Lovely settting, great location for walks. Social club on a Fri/ Sat added bonus. Showers/toilets very clean.

Liked Absolutely incredible stay! From the getgo I had such a friendly welcome from both family members (I am assuming). The pitches were really well sized, the view was stunning and it was incredibly clean and tidy. Not to mention the facilities were central, clean and there were various showers, etc so you didn’t have to wait to use them. It was in a lovely remote area with a stunning drive up to the site, and local landmarks weren’t far, which was perfect for exploring! Not to mention that roof tent’s were accepted - a bonus! The price point was perfect and I will be back 😁

Liked We stayed here for two nights as three families with young kids. The gentleman running everything couldn’t have been more welcoming or helpful. The site is basic, it doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t, but the amenities are clean and well maintained. The campsite shop is well stocked and the rural location is fantastic. We would definitely stay again!

Liked I, personally, liked how rural the site is and it was very well-kept and tidy.

Liked Friendly welcoming owner, clean and tidy, peaceful & relaxed environment with plenty of space to enjoy that isnt used by pitches.
We forgot to pack our tent poles and amazingly the owner was very kind to help us with a tent to borrow for a few nights, very thankful for that!
We would definitely stay at the campsite again, had a lovely time.

Local attractions

Roman history enthusiasts make a beeline for Brocolitia Roman Fort, better known as Carrawburgh (20 minutes’ drive). Not much remains of this fort (one of 16 along Hadrian’s Wall) besides the earthworks, but the ruins of the Temple of Mithras, built in the third century, sit nearby. For more Roman artefacts, you can then move on to the Vindolanda museum (half an hour). Kielder Water (35 minutes) is a large reservoir surrounded by woodland. The lake itself is a popular spot for watersports and fishing, while the forest is laced with trails and cycle routes. You might see water voles and red squirrels during your wanderings; or head to Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre to admire raptors. When in Newcastle upon Tyne (55 minutes), be sure to take a picture of the landmark Tyne Bridge, with its massive steel arch. The Discovery Museum has interesting maritime displays, including ‘Turbinia’, the world’s first water craft powered by a steam turbine; while Great North Museum: Hancock has a large archaeological section.
