Peaceful site

  • Peaceful, eco-friendly rural site in Northumberland National Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Hadrian's Wall; 25 minutes to Hexham
  • Next to Wark Forest for gravel cycling; village play area a short walk
Hexham in one direction, Kielder Water in the other – and here, around halfway between the two, on the edge of Wark Forest, is Stonehaugh Campsite, a fabulously peaceful spot from which to explore the many attractions of Northumberland. It’s safe to say that this is a very well located site, surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of the Northumberland National Park and within easy reach of both Newcastle and Hadrian’s Wall. Closer to home, there’s some great gravel cycling in neighbouring Wark Forest, and access to lots of walking and cycling trails including the Pennine Way and North Pennine Cycle Route (NCN 68). There’s an interesting history to the local village, Stonehaugh (pronounced Stone-hoff) – it was designed in the 1950s as a village for Forestry Commission workers, but only 34 of the planned 250 houses were ever built. That means it’s not big enough to support a shop or pub, so it's worth stocking up on supplies while passing through Hexham or Bellingham (both about 25 minutes’ drive away). The site also has a small shop selling essentials, including milk, pot noodles and biscuits. Other facilities on site include a bathroom block (powered by a wind turbine and with solar-heated water), drinking water taps, a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area. There are picnic tables on site, and more at the nearby Warksburn picnic area (10 minutes’ walk), where you can have a paddle in the burn too. Also a short walk away are the village play area and the village hall, which has a social club that’s open in the evening from Friday to Sunday.

What customers say

Peaceful, well-kept site in a lovely spot. Praised for spotless, level pitches, friendly hosts & eco-friendly power. Guests loved the quiet, space & stargazing. Toilets/showers a bit dated but clean. Midges & lack of playground noted. Great value for a relaxing break.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Fantastic campsite, welcoming and knowledgeable campsite owners gave me some fantastic trail running routes straight from the campsite. Shower/toilet facilities are basic, but plenty of them for the number of campers and very clean. Also the family bathroom with an actual bath would be great for camping with young kids.
Looking forward to staying again!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Great site in an amazing location for exploring the beautiful Northumberland countryside. The hosts were lovely, friendly and informative. The site is immaculate and pitches are level. The onsite shop could be very handy (we didn't need it as we only stayed 1 night). Excellent value for money and we definitely return

Powered grass campsite

Liked Facilities were clean. Lots of open space, not crowded. Cloudy first night but saw stars on second night.

Disliked Midges were relentless - take spray with you!
A kids park/playground on site would have been good and felt there was enough space.
