Whether you’ve made your way here lured by ‘Wuthering Heights’ or simply because all the talk about God’s own county has whetted your curiosity, chances are the dramatic landscapes of the North Yorkshire Moors will not disappoint. And North Yorkshire Moors Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite – amid woodland a 15-minute drive from Whitby – is just the place for a family break. After choosing your pitch (there are exposed areas and more secluded, shaded options), you might want to familiarise yourself with your surroundings. Stroll to the western edge of the site to admire sweeping views of the moors. Whether you have the family dog in tow or not, you’ll probably find yourself walking around those very moorlands before long, and with a staggering 1,300 miles of footpaths, you have an embarrassment of (hiking) riches. For a break from hiking, there are sandy beaches at Saltwick (15 minutes’ drive) and Scarborough (half an hour); golf at Whitby; and mountain-biking trails at Dixons Hollow Bike Park (45 minutes), in North Riding Forest Park. This site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and it’s open to members and non-members alike, with special rates for members (the price displayed). Non-members will have to pay £15/night extra or purchase a £69 membership, which is well worth considering, especially if you’re likely to spend more than four nights at a Club site over the course of a year. In addition to discounts at more than 140 UK sites, the membership brings other benefits, such as access to tailored caravan/motorhome insurance and discounts on days out.

Local attractions

In Whitby (15 minutes’ drive), visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum before tackling the 199 stone steps leading up the cliff to St Mary’s Church and (just beyond) the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey. From there, soak up the splendid views of the town and the River Esk, then head back to the harbour to join a coastal cruise. From Whitby, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs vintage trains through the moors all the way to Pickering (35 minutes). Railway enthusiasts can also visit Saltburn-by-the-Sea (45 minutes), where steam and diesel locomotives pull trains on the 15-inch gauge Miniature Railway. Saltburn is also known for its 19th-century Cliff Tramway. There are spectacular coastal views at Filey Brigg Cliffs (50 minutes), a rocky headland jutting out into the North Sea. The cliffs are also a top spot for birdwatchers, with regular sightings of oystercatchers and guillemots. The long-distance Cleveland Way hiking path starts right here.
