Endless sea views at brook house farm

  • Static caravan with North Sea views on a Whitby farm, North Yorkshire
  • Direct access to the Cleveland Way; Goathland 20 minutes’ drive
  • Kitchen and private decking; Whitby pubs and shops 20 minutes’ walk
Seaside holiday or a break in a historic town? No need to decide when you book a stay at Brook House Farm, set on clifftops with sea and moorland views, but just 20 minutes’ walk from the centre of Whitby. Here you get the best of both worlds: peace and seclusion on a working farm, and townie attractions like shops, pubs and restaurants close at hand, too. Well insulated against any inclement North Yorkshire weather, the accommodation is in a static caravan sleeping four (in proper beds, too), with living, dining and kitchenette areas, plus plenty of space so you don’t get under each other’s feet. You’ll have excellent North Sea panoramas from the timber decking – there’s also a sheltered gravelled area for catching some sun (when it shows its face) – and the mysterious ruins of Whitby Abbey stand out on the horizon. There is secure private parking at the site, which is at the end of a no-through road. Brook House Farm is surrounded on all sides by green fields and the sea. Your only company here is likely to be the resident pigs, Suzie the friendly sheep and the occasional moggy on pest-control duties.

What customers say

This is a small, peaceful working farm site offering stunning sea and Abbey views, ideal for walks into Whitby. Pitches are well-sized and generally level. The single toilet/shower block is kept clean, though described by some as basic. Friendly, helpful owners and farm animals add to the rustic charm. Some visitors suggest adding a pot wash area.

Liked Very friendly owners, quiet site. It’s only a 25 minute walk to the Whitby steps which is along the cliff tops and very beautiful. The shower and toilet are very clean and definitely up to standard. It also has beautiful views and friendly horses and cats pottering around which was lovely.

Disliked The only downside we found was there isn’t a place to do your washing up. It didn’t really matter as we just boiled the kettle to do it. But if I had to find anything I would change, it would be that. That being said it will definitely not stop us visiting again.

Liked The pitch was in a beautiful location, quiet and secluded. Horses on the farm very friendly and it was nice to greet them.

Disliked The site itself is quite small and could imagine quite crammed in the summer months. Disappointed with the one shower on site which was full of insects and leaves on both occasions we used it, and it's located next to one of the pitches, along with the waste area, luckily we were not allocated that pitch. No refuge bins that we could see to dispose of rubbish and we had to drive our camper to the fresh water fill up point which was also crammed in with the waste point and shower cubicle.

Liked Lovely peaceful site with scenic views. Clean facilities and lovely owners. Once set up, you can just take up the surroundings. A relatively easy walk straight to Whitby. Mind you do have to traverse the 199 steps but the views are worth it!

Local attractions

The Cleveland Way, a long-distance trail linking Helmsley (in the North York Moors National Park) to Filey Brigg (on the coast) can be accessed from the site. Follow it southwards to reach the pretty village of Robin Hood’s Bay (about an hour and three quarters on foot), where a small museum illustrates the fishing heritage of the area – and its smuggling heritage, too. In Whitby (five minutes’ drive) you can choose to delve into the world of 18th-century exploration at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, or indulge your passion for Gothic horror at the Dracula Experience and at Whitby Abbey. Speaking of which… check out the view of the abbey’s dramatic hilltop ruins from the opposite bank of the River Esk, where it appears nicely framed by the Whalebone Arch. If there are any Harry Potter enthusiasts in your party, you might want to visit Goathland (20 minutes), the unassuming station of which doubled as Hogsmeade, the terminus for the Hogwarts Express. Goathland is also one of the stations served by the heritage trains run by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
