What customers say

Beautiful, peaceful, natural setting with stunning views, great for a quiet getaway. Well-kept, spacious pitches, some with fire pits/benches. Lovely tea room & shop. Friendly staff. Basic, distant washrooms & bumpy access roads noted by a few.

Bluebell primitive forest floor RV campsite (XL)

Liked I was greeted by two very friendly little dogs who took me for a walk around the tearooms.

Disliked Took 20 minutes of looking around (with the dogs) to find someone when I arrived to find my pitch. The chap I eventually found didn’t particularly seem to want me there.
Got to the pitch, looked absolutely nothing like the photos, it’s a small area that’s been carved out of the hill so surrounded on 3 sides by muddy walls, not big enough to set up my side awning without spilling into the access for the next pitches.
About 10 minutes into setting up, and starting to think I’d chosen the wrong site for my much needed 2 nights of relaxation, I’d already spotted at least 15 wasps trying to get into my car and tent. Everywhere I looked there was another one. Clearly a nest is somewhere on or around that pitch. I packed everything back away and left the site. £60 down the drain, which having now been to the site is excessive for the pitch I booked (bluebell)
3 wasps also joined me on the car ride to another site :(

From the manager: Dear Lou,

We are sorry you had a bad experiencewith us, and didn't feel you could come and speak to us bebore you left.
Wasps have been horrific this year in the uk. Experts in the 'wasp world' are calling it a bumper year for wasps due to the warm and dry spring! Everyone we have spoken to has said they have been especially bad. We are on a weekly basis looking for nests as we have noticed an increase, but are yet to find a nest anywhere onsite. The site is located right next to a forest, so maybe they are in there. Something that is very much out of our control unfortunately. At this time of year they are very placid and are leaving their colonies to die.
With regards to your comments about the muddy walls and carved in the hills. This site was set up this year, and each pitch is dug into the soil to give privacy between pitches, with individual prviate look outs into the forestry and views infront. All the work completed has all been planted with wild flowers, so hopefully next year they will come through with some colour. With a mix of no rain, its been inpossible to establish a new wild flower garden. The site is at 1000 feet above sea level- flowers don't come through straight away at this height- things take a little longer.
The day you arrived we were closed as a tearoom, so i can only apologise you didn't easily find someone. You are given the contact details so you were able to call us, and it is signposted throughout the site to go to the wooden doors at the front of the property where there are instructions fo campers staying.
Unfortunately, on this occasion we didn't forfil your expectations, but if you had spoken to us onsite we would of been able to move you to another location onsite.
Hopefully you will give us another chance in the future.
Kind regards
Ginny

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked A first class experience, a lovely woodland campsite sat just off the Cleveland Way. Very friendly and straightforward on arrival. Once we had set up we visited the onsite café for coffee and cake. Again very relaxed and dog friendly. I couldn't recommend the site enough.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Beautiful! The clue is in the name. Lovely café too. Nice relaxed vibe. Would love to return. Right on the edge of the forest with fabulous walking/cycling all around. Being provided with a firepit/BBQ was also a nice touch. The little shop was very handy.

Disliked Would only make a suggestion to extend check out time as 10am is a little early for the cost of the pitch and maybe abolish the dog charge.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Peaceful site with beautiful views. Lovely tea room. Generally well-maintained facilities. Honestly shop available 24/7. Plenty of drinking water taps across the site. Friendly staff. On the Cleveland Way so direct access to loads of walks of varying lengths and difficulty. Fire pit and picnic bench at every pitch. Very dog friendly.

Disliked Shower didn't drain properly so ended up standing in a puddle of water with the plug hole backing up. Out of date produce in the shop - needs to be checked more regularly.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Really lovely wooded camp spot that gave protection from the elements and a feeling of peace. The wooded site only had 6 pitches so felt really small although there were other pitches.
Loved the cars not being in the field.
The horse box shower looked basic but worked really well.
Very relaxed owners.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Quiet campsite. Pitches have lots of space and you can select your own. I didn't use it put the washing and honestly shop and courtyard sitting area which would shelter from rain. Plenty of hot water, and I liked that eco friendly shampoo etc was provided. Good info received via text pre arrival so had no problem knowing where to go. Price is good. Would return.

Disliked Some minor moans. Spotted quite a bit of dog poo left which was a shame.
Facilities are basic but functional, and as expected. I understand that you will get cobwebs and dust however most of the cobwebs are old and a quick run around with duster would hugely improve the appearance of the toilet block and give it less of the appeal of an old shed. Given the size of the pitches I was surprised that the amenities block was so tiny. This may be I do with planning permission in the national park. Getting dry from the shower resulted in a few scraped elbows.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Was the second time here, and enjoyed it even more! It really is relaxing, safe and has amazing, beautiful scenery!

Stayed Wednesday night until Saturday morning with my 6 year old son and my dog. My son loved going off exploring on his bike and when we went on bike rides / walks!

The camp site was sadly pretty quiet first few nights, but became busier on Friday which was amazing to see! It really is an undiscovered gem of a camp site! I LOVE it!

Disliked Just wish we could have stayed longer!

Local attractions

The atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (20 minutes’ drive) sit on the right bank of the River Rye. Established in the 12th century, this Cistercian abbey fell victim to Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s. You can learn more about the building’s history in the museum, which exhibits masonry fragments and stone carvings. Are you in Yorkshire or Provence? You might find it difficult to tell the difference at Yorkshire Lavender (40 minutes), a 60-acre lavender farm in the Howardian Hills National Landscape. Themed areas include a lavender maze, a wildflower meadow and a Mediterranean garden, plus a sculptural recreation of a cricket match… Whether you’re into Vikings, railways or chocolate, York (an hour) has a museum for you. It’s also worth taking a stroll along the city walls and, of course, visiting the spectacular York Minster. Feeling fit? Climb the 275 steps to the top of the Central Tower for far-reaching views of the city.
