  • Family-run Yorkshire Dales site nine miles from Malham Cove
  • Pop-up near to Grassington and 10 minutes' drive from Skipton
  • Walks from the site; pub and café next door; farm shop across the road
With a spectacular setting nine miles from Malham Cove and tucked under Cracoe Fell, Jean’s Field is set up for Yorkshire Dales wild camping for families, friends and their dogs. Hiking Malham Cove (25 minutes' drive) is, of course, a must for many when they come to the Yorkshire Dales, and very handily at this site, you'll get to relax after any busy days out at the excellent 16th-century pub and café right next door. For walks, take the Rylstone Cross Loop directly from your pitch. If you’re looking for ideas for more walks or day trips, site owner Andrew is the man to ask. For cyclists, there's easy access to the Way of the Roses cycle path too, and the site is on the Tour de Yorkshire route. If you’re into your climbing, this is also a terrific spot for you, as you can get into practice at Cracoe Memorial Boulders (five minutes’ walk) before tackling Rylstone Cross (five minutes’ drive) or the challenge that is Kilnsey Crag (10 minutes). And you’ll certainly never starve. The camping field is on the edge of the pretty village of Cracoe. You can pick up supplies from the farm shop across the road, which also doubles as a tearoom and garden centre. If you’re seriously into good food, there’s a Michelin-starred restaurant in Hetton village (five minutes). Now, about those spacious pitches. Each one is clearly marked with a flagstone – please put your barbecues on top of this to stop the grass getting damaged. As this is almost-wild camping, basic facilities stretch to portable toilets, and there is no electricity, so remember to pack a torch to prevent any night-time mishaps. Getting to Jean’s Field is easy, by the way; it’s just off the B6265 Skipton to Grassington road, so no narrow, twisty lanes to navigate for you – but peace reigns supreme in the camping field as it’s set well away from any traffic noise.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: I really enjoyed my stay here - a nice cosy campsite with enough room to fit plenty of people in, with large pitches for everyone. The location is stunning, don't be put off by it being surrounded by houses, the houses are lovely country cottages in a quiet village and the amazing Dales countryside is literally 30 seconds away from the field - go out the gate, up the lane and you have amazing countryside and views to enjoy. The war memorial at the top of the fell hill behind the campsite is worth the journey (wear good shoes as it's steep!). Toilets are portaloos and these were pretty clean considering the number of people sharing them and I saw the owner cleaning them the next morning - looking at the rota on the wall, this appears to be done daily. No bins (not a bad thing, people should be responsible for their own litter), so remember to bring something to take your litter home in. I was pleased to see everyone did this and the site remained clean. I will definitely be back.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: I recently had the absolute pleasure of staying at a charming little campsite run by the incredibly kind-hearted owner, Andrew. Let me start by saying that this place exceeded all my expectations, and I cannot recommend it enough to any nature enthusiast seeking a serene getaway. From the moment my family and I arrived, we were greeted with warmth and genuine hospitality by Andrew. His dedication to maintaining a spotless campsite was immediately evident. The grounds were impeccably clean, from the well-maintained trails to the pristine restrooms. It was a breath of fresh air to be in such a naturally beautiful environment, free of litter and any signs of negligence. However, what made our stay truly exceptional was Andrew's unwavering dedication to the campers' well-being. He took the time to personally interact with each guest, offering assistance with set-up and providing valuable insights on local hikes and activities. It was evident that Andrew cared deeply about ensuring everyone had a memorable experience. His genuine enthusiasm for camping was infectious, and it made us appreciate this incredible hobby even more. Andrew's attentive nature extended beyond just providing information. He frequently checked in with campers, making sure they had everything they needed and offering helpful suggestions to enhance their stay. His thoughtfulness and willingness to go above and beyond truly set him apart from other campsite owners I've encountered. In conclusion, I cannot praise this campsite and its extraordinary owner, Andrew, enough. If you're searching for a place that offers unparalleled cleanliness, ultimate tranquility, and an owner who genuinely cares about your camping experience, look no further. Andrew's campsite is a hidden gem that I am thrilled to have discovered, and I will undoubtedly make it a regular escape from the chaos of everyday life.

From the manager: Wow! An embarrassed Yorkshireman here Saima, I’m struggling to digest all those compliments! Whilst I don’t believe that we are perfect by any means, I do try to make sure that what we do offer is the best that it can be; spacious pitches where you can stretch out and not feel too crowded even when we are busy, with basic yet clean facilities and an attentive service from myself ensuring that you don’t miss out on what we or the area has to offer. I’m pleased to hear that this does come across and that our efforts are appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review. It was genuinely nice to meet you and your family and you are most welcome to come again :)

Local attractions

You’re bound to end up in Skipton (10 minutes’ drive) at some point. The “Gateway to The Dales” is famous for its medieval castle, its sprawling street market and independent shops. You can get a pint of Yorkshire ale in one of the many, many pubs – or how about a trip down the Leeds and Liverpool Canal on a narrow boat? Scenic Wharfedale is also on hand; Grassington (10 minutes) is better known these days as Darrowby in “All Creatures Great and Small”, and has a lively centre with lots of crafty-type shops and more pubs. Gorgeous Dales villages like Burnsall (10 minutes) and Appletreewick (15 minutes) are the starting points for walks along the Wharfe river, while Bolton Abbey (20 minutes) has plenty of scenic strolls among its handsome ruins. Further afield, a host of other adventures await. Literary fans can head for Haworth (40 minutes) for a tour of the rectory where the talented Brontë family lived – and for a big night out, you can catch a train from Skipton station (15 minutes) into Leeds (an hour) or Bradford (50 minutes).
