  • Family-friendly site on an estate on the banks of the Ribble river
  • A 10-minute drive from Settle and 20 minutes from Malham Cove
  • On-site Knights Table serves homemade cuisine and local ales; fishing
Gallop forth to Knight Stainforth Caravan and Camping Park if you require a river Ribble base in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a mere couple of miles from Settle and on the roomy estate of a manor house which once belonged to the Knights Templar. The estate is the 45-acre Knight Stainforth Hall, dating back to pre-Norman times and a nifty base for digging into the dales and visiting the Lake District 40 minutes' drive away. It has been run by the Maudsley family since 1927, and these days, it has a toilet and shower block with hot showers, laundry facilities and a washing-up area. Junior knights (knightettes?) can charge around the ball games area and playground. There are battery charging and cool block freezing facilities available, as well as a shop with an off-license selling basic supplies, camping accessories and gas refills. Fishing is available on site; just pick up a permit at reception before setting out to see what you can reel in. When you feel peckish, take your seat at the on-site Knights Table restaurant to tuck into homemade cuisine and local ales. It's also a 10-minute drive from the site to Settle, where there are plenty of other shops and restaurants.

What customers say

This well-maintained campsite has spectacular views and a fantastic riverside location, perfect for walks and even wild swimming. Guests consistently praise the spotless facilities, including showers and washrooms, and the roomy sites. The on-site restaurant, The Knight's Table, gets rave reviews for its great food and value. Staff are often called friendly and helpful. While most visitors had no issues, a few noted some sloped sites. Highly recommended for a return visit.

Powered grass campervan, trailer tent or tent campsite

Liked Beautiful setting, staff/ team brilliant and very helpful, pitch sizeable. Site feels safe and secure, facilities clean and plentiful. The river, beautiful and minutes walk from the tent. Quiet at night, great location for local highlights - waterfalls, caves, market towns. The on site restaurant is next level- service and food both excellent.

Powered grass campervan, trailer tent or tent campsite

Liked Fantastic site. Very clean and spacious showers/toilet facilities. Brilliant walks around site down to the river and to the town Fantastic views. Large pitches. Wi-Fi hit and miss but still got signal when needed it.

Disliked Nothing to dislike other than pitches on a slope and bit noisy with kids after 10pm but it was a bank holiday and they were having fun.

Local attractions

Once you've settled a few days strolling, cycling or cantering in the countryside surrounding Knight Knight Stainforth Caravan and Camping Park (the Pennine Way is close by too if you want to walk 267 miles or so), take a few day trips to find out what else is around: caving, waterfalls, the Lake District and market towns are all easily accessible. Prefer something easier? The superb Settle to Carlisle railway can be picked up a couple of miles away. Cavernous caves and climbing are both for the taking in the area to dig into: White Scar Cave, the longest show cave in England, is nearby at Ingleton and Ingleborough Cave is a little to the east. Tours are available at both. From Malhamdale, clamber the three famous landmarks, Malham Cove, Malham Tarn and Gordale Scar, or walk around all three in the eight-mile clockwise walk from Malham. (More climbing? The Yorkshire Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside await.) Another well-trodden trek in the region is the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, starting and ending at Ingleton on a four-mile rocky road along the River Twiss and past the Pecca, Thornton Force, Beezley Falls, Rival Falls and Snow Falls waterfalls. Or take things a bit easier and wander around the local market towns of Settle, Skipton and Hawes to pick up local produce to have back at base.
