  • Quiet adults-only farm site with lovely views over the countryside
  • In the North York Moors, a 20-minute drive from Scarborough
  • Wifi access; a 15-minute drive to North Yorkshire Water Park
'Peaceful' is the watchword at this adults-only site in the North York Moors. Much of that stillness is down to its out of the way location, off a quiet country road in a national park. The fact that Wykeham Grange Farm is only for over-18's certainly helps too. What's nearby? Well, this restful park is within a mile and a half of pubs that serve home-cooked food, while the Scarborough coast is around 20 minutes away by car. Also nearby are rivers for fishing and canoeing and a horse-riding centre – likely to be a hit with both experienced equestrian types and those yet to step into the saddle. Ask about golf and rock climbing opportunities too. The site may be reserved for adults, but dogs are allowed, which is good news indeed given the local area's miles' worth of footpaths and bridleways. Heading off to nearby lakes (with or without the pup) and having a go at the aquatic activities is another great shout. Back at base, you'll be taken care of with free wifi – great for planning all those trips to seaside spots along the Yorkshire coast that you're bound to get up to while here. With so many options in that department, you might prefer to simply wing it and serendipitously sample Filey (25 minutes), Robin Hood's Bay (40 minutes) and Whitby (an hour) in any order you please.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The location was stunning, right on the edge of Wykeham forest a short drive to Wykeham Lakes and just 20 minutes into Scarborough!
The hut had everything I needed for my stay and was lovely and toasty in the evenings after half an hour with the heater on!

Local attractions

There's a bunch of classic North York Moors spots close to base that definitely deserve a visit. Particularly recommended are Thornton Dale (15 minutes' drive) with its pretty village green and stream, Pickering (25 minutes), a market town home to the famed North York Moors Railway, and Rievaulx Abbey (50 minutes), a gorgeous 11th-century abbey in spectacular countryside surrounds. If more bracing outdoor activities are in order, you might like a high-altitude trip to Go Ape Dalby (25 minutes), watersports at North Yorkshire Water Park (10 minutes) or long-distance coastal walks between Scarborough (20 minutes) and Whitby (an hour). For something less physical, there's also the possibility of catching a race at Oliver's Mount (20 minutes) or genteel strolls in the well-kept grounds of Peasholm Park (15 minutes). When indoor attractions are the order of the day, perhaps see what's swimming at the Sea Life Centre (20 minutes), a popular aquarium in Scarborough that might come in handy on rainier days. Alternatively, you might like to sort a round or two of ten-pin bowling at Olympia Leisure (20 minutes), which is also in town.
