Grass and gravel pitch

  • Peaceful adults-only site on the edge of North Riding Forest Park
  • Scarborough 25 minutes’ drive; Castle Howard half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; five minutes’ walk from the nearest pub
Explore the splendid landscapes of North Yorkshire from the leafy, peaceful surrounds of Coachman Caravan Park. This is an adults-only site, so you will have to leave the kids with their grandparents for a few days. However, do bring your four-legged companions along – not only are they welcome here, but they will likely wag their tails in utter delight at the prospect of epic walkies, whether on the moors (15 minutes’ drive) or on beaches like Cayton Bay (25 minutes). Sitting just off the A170, on the outskirts of the village of Snainton, Coachman Caravan Park has spacious hardstanding and grass pitches. Each pitch comes with its own water and electric hook-up, as well as a night lamp, so you won’t have to don that rather unsexy head torch if you want to read before bed… There’s also a well-maintained toilet and shower block (housed in a Yorkshire stone building). There’s heaps to do in the area for active types: from golfing (a nine-hole course is a five-minute drive away), to fishing and watersports at Wykham Lake (15 minutes); and that’s without taking into account the hiking and biking trails in North Riding Forest Park (15 minutes). Barbecues are allowed; however, with a traditional pub serving home-cooked food right next door, why would you bother? There’s another couple of restaurants in the village, along the A170 (about 10 minutes on foot), or you can head to Scarborough (25 minutes) for fish and chips on the beach.

What customers say

This small, adult-only site gets praise for its quiet vibe and cleanliness, though some found it overcrowded with poor pitch assignments and a lack of management. Basic washrooms need updating.

Liked Nice spacious pitches
Tidy pitches
Not too many close together
Although when we first looked to book the reviews were slightly negative, we found it clean and tidy and really quiet the pitches were spacious and it was everything we needed
We don’t use the shower rooms so we can’t comment on those but we certainly will stay here again
Also lovely pub about a minutes walk away with lovely food
A lovely relaxing stay
With lots of lovely walks on the doorstep

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Peaceful, clean, quiet owner called to let us know what pitch number we would be on. Countryside views.

Disliked No staff on site heard complaints not all electric points were working. Customers breached fire regulations by sharing one pitch for 2 vehicles others joining vehicles together this isnt a safe practice and puts everyone at risk.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Small personal site that is not suitable for children. The pub at the side of site allows dogs and the meals are lovely

Disliked No-one to welcome you on arrival. You aren't allocated a pitch that caused an argument with 2 other guests and 1 party actually left due to this. It was entertaining to watch through our curtains though. Leaking toilet and cold in there. No water supply was working on one plot. It was reported but never resolved so we shared ours with them

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Quiet, secluded, site with Hook up and water at each pitch, pitch 4 corner would have been tight but rest were decent sized,

Disliked Of the 2 toilets on site, 1 was leaking water all over the floor for the duration of our 4 day stay, no heating in both toilet/shower facility,
The grassed areas needed cutting ,
No personal communication due to owners not on site,

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Nothing.

Disliked Everything. There isn't anyone to greet you or allocate a pitch on arrival. Attempted to call the telephone number provided numerous times but there was no answer. We were as informed by someone in the pub that the owner is never on site. Building materials were left all over, grass wasn't cut and the facilities were really poor. The toilets and showers are not fit for use, very dirty, I wouldn't let an animal in them. After seeing all of this and trying to contact someone, there was no way we were staying here and luckily managed to find another site to stay at. We had luckily only paid the deposit, not sure how they have the audacity to charge people to stay here, we would have rather gone home. Not sure how anyone manages to stay here, I would not recommend this site at all.

Local attractions

Climb the green headland at Scarborough for views of the two wide sandy beaches, then follow the Sea Wall Heritage Trail to learn about the town’s history. Bookworms might want to pay tribute to novelist Anne Brontë, who is buried at St Mary’s Church, while some might prefer to catch a show at the Scarborough Spa. Castle Howard (half an hour's drive) might look familiar even if you’ve never been there before. It’s not a case of déjà-vu, though: it’s just that the house has been used as a location for TV dramas like ‘Victoria’ and ‘Bridgerton’. Its grounds include a walled garden, plus elegant fountains and lakes. In the fishing town of Whitby (40 minutes), the atmospheric clifftop ruins of an abbey (accessed via the puff-inducing 199 Steps) are said to have inspired author Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’. Visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, then cross the River Esk to see the Whalebone Arch, the ideal frame for a selfie against the background of the town.
