  • Quiet four-acre Co Durham site close to the Coast to Coast cycle route
  • A 10-minute drive from Seaham and 20 minutes from Durham
  • Campfires allowed; space for kids to play
As cracking Co Durham locations go, Sharpley Camping has surely managed to bag one of the finest spots: this spacious rural site is in a particularly nifty location between Durham (20 minutes’ drive) and the seaside at Seaham (10 minutes). In fact, you can even spot the sea from various points around the site, to whet your appetite for coastal outings. So that’s city and coast sorted, but this is a fine spot for fresh-air jaunts into the countryside too: it’s close to lots of local – and the Coast to Coast bike route if you’re feeling more energetic/ambitious. Alternatively, you could simply settle in to soak up the fresh air and fine views on site instead: there should be plenty of space for such things around the four-acre field. Campfires are allowed to keep you warm of an evening, and there’s space for kids to play well away from the flames too. Facilities at this laidback site are fairly minimal, but all the basics are covered, including a washing-up area, showers and toilets. There's a pub in the village of Seaton (five minutes' drive) and supermarkets within a similar length of drive.

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: Quiet location .Friendly staff (David). Pod was clean. No problems with checking in. Great that you got a bag of logs for each night. The hot tub was hot and ready to go for our arrival. Nice size hot tub .

Disliked: One shower for the whole site. Toilets were ready for an update and the sink area to wash up. Mattress could have been a little thicker. Maybe a few hooks inside the pod to save a bit of room .

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: The pod was clean and comfort table with plenty of space between ours and the pods on either side. The hot tub was clean and set up ready for us on arrival, logs were provided and for £5 we were able to rent a tripod to have a bbq on. The host was very accommodating and friendly the toilets were clean and smelt fresh. Would recommend this site to anyone travelling in the area.

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Fantastic site! Haven’t camped for 28 years and it was the kids’ first time (6yo and 7yo). It was clean, well maintained, beautiful and easy to get to. The pitches are a decent size and the owner was really welcoming. We’ll definitely be back.

Disliked: The lock on the furthest ladies toilet stall was a bit sticky. That was literally it.

Local attractions

If you’ve come along with an eye on getting active, there’s plenty to keep you moving nearby: a golf course and fly fishing area are within a five-minute drive, as are a go-kart track and a paintballing centre for those with something a bit more adrenaline-fuelled in mind. For more of a recce of your rural surrounds, take the nippers off to Down At The Farm (five minutes’ drive) for all sorts of animal encounters including pig washing, bunny cuddling and lamb feeding. Wilder beasts can often be spotted flitting about at Rainton Meadows nature reserve (15 minutes). Being so close to the coast you won’t want to miss a stroll around the seaside town of Seaham (10 minutes), taking in its heritage centre and seeking out the World War I tribute sculpture known fondly as Tommy… and then hitting the beach of course. And you won’t want to miss a day trip to Durham either – a 20-minute drive should get you up there to visit the cathedral, castle and botanic gardens and take a ramble by the river. Beamish (the Living Museum of the North) is 25 minutes away if you fancy coming face to face with a bit more history.
