  • Quiet family site a few minutes' walk from Mickleton and its two pubs
  • On the edge of the North Pennines, 15 mins' drive from Barnard Castle
  • Set in the grounds of a traditional farmhouse; bus stop just outside
Set up camp, then set out on foot – Newton Lodge Campsite is in a handy spot Co. Durham countryside location a few minutes’ walk from the Tees Valley Railway Walk and (crucially) the pair of pubs in the pretty village of Mickleton. Settle in at this Teesdale site and you’ll be well set for roaming around the local countryside and heading into the North Pennines National Landscape. The Pennine Way is a couple of miles away, and popular spots like the waterfalls of Summerhill Force and High Force are within a 15-minute drive. You may also like to explore the town of Barnard Castle – it’s about 15 minutes’ drive away, or you can hop on a handy bus service from just outside the site. Buses stop at several villages along the way, which can be useful for walkers. This site is in the grounds of a traditional farmhouse and it’s a low-key kind of place that’s all about preserving the rural peace. It caters for families and couples (no groups) and operates a low-noise policy, especially after 9pm when quiet hours come into effect. Essential facilities include a kitchen with washing-up area and kettle, and a bathroom block with toilets and showers. Being well away from urban life, the skies get very dark here at night, giving you spectacular views of the starry skies on clear nights. Barbecues are permitted on the pitches, so you may like to bring yours along for a bit of outdoor cooking as the sun goes down.

What customers say

This quiet, tidy site has large grass pitches & spotless facilities. Owners are friendly, the village setting lovely with pubs nearby. Fridge/freezer on site. Some road/rooster noise, but generally unobtrusive. One guest found dog fees steep.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very clean. Friendly owner and situated near some great tourist attractions. Fridge and kettle came in very handy. Almost everything I needed for cleaning and for the shower was provided which also came in handy.

Disliked With it being a small quiet camp site there's not allot to do with the kids while on site.

Local attractions

You’ll be just on the edge of the North Pennines National Landscape here, so bring your boots along to hit the trails to gorgeous spots like the Summerhill Force (10 minutes’ drive) and High Force (15 minutes) waterfalls. In fact, there are lots of waterfalls in this area, but you may prefer to look out for ancient landmarks like the Lune Head Stone Circle (15 minutes) or head to Hamsterley Forest (half an hour) for woodland walks, cycling and disc golf. For a different kind of walk, take a stroll around Raby Castle, Park and Gardens (20 minutes), with its medieval castle and deer park, or spend some time in Barnard Castle (15 minutes), visiting the castle ruins and Bowes Museum. Kirkby Stephen (half an hour) is another lovely town to visit, or you could have some city time in Durham (45 minutes). You may well spot some wildlife as you wander, but for surefire sightings you’ll need to go to Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre (an hour). And while you’ll often get great stargazing on site, you can learn more about what you’re looking at with an evening at Grassholme Observatory (two minutes).
