  • Small family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Barnard Castle
  • Half an hour’s drive to Upper Teesdale nature reserve and waterfalls
  • Pub half an hour’s walk away; shops and eateries in Barnard Castle
Time to get away for a while and recharge somewhere nice? Pick yourself a little hideaway at Hide and Bolt, a family-friendly site with a top-notch location just five minutes’ drive from Barnard Castle and half an hour’s drive from the Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve, which has waterfalls, caves and all sorts of cool natural spots. It's a fairly simple setup here but Hide and Bolt has a dedicated building set up with a toilet and a sink with mains hot and cold water. The site makes a splendid base for exploring, as there's countryside on all sides and reservoirs, waterfalls and castles all within driving distance. Please note the site is next to a road so there may be some traffic noise, but it's mainly used during rush hours so shouldn't disturb your nights too much. Filling up on tasty food should be straightforward around here. There’s a cosy family-run pub half an hour’s walk away (open at selected times) and, of course, a huge assortment of eateries, supermarkets, pubs and other foodie spots in the splendid Barnard Castle. This market town is on the river Tees and has medieval castle ruins and an excellent art and fashion collection in The Bowes Museum, based in a grand French house. Chasing waterfalls part of your plan? The UNESCO biosphere reserve of Teesdale National Nature Reserve alone is home to High Force (half an hour’s drive), Low Force (25 minutes) and Summerhill Force & Gibson's Cave (25 minutes).

Local attractions

If you're aiming for some angling, you can get your fix at Grassholme Reservoir (25 minutes’ drive), which is also a favourite local location for scenic waterside walks and watersports – you can book paddleboarding taster sessions for a first go on the water if you like. The Grassholme Observatory (20 minutes) will turn your attention to the stars with themed talks, family astronomy sessions and other activities. Those of you who’d rather look back to the past can head to grand buildings like the medieval Raby Castle Park and Gardens (10 minutes), which has a 200-acre deer park and trails in the 18th-century walled garden. Egglestone Abbey (10 minutes) on the river Tees is a ruined Premonstratensian abbey with remains of canons and living quarters. And don't forget about darling Darlington (20 minutes). This town’s claim to fame is that it had the world’s first permanent passenger steam locomotive. There’s a museum all about it, called the Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum (25 minutes).

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked: - Very friendly host who was very helpful
- Quiet area - small site and we were the only campers during our stay
- Free choice of pitch site
- Lovely view from the pitch
- Easy and quick access to local town (5 min drive)
- Play area on site for the kids

Disliked: - Felt very expensive (per night price was high with electric hook up an extra £25 per night). Most places are cheaper with more amenities included
- New shower was available but for an additional charge per shower. Given the high base price of the pitch it would be nice if the shower facility was included in the price
- Only one sink for both washing and washing up area
- Beside a busy road, some road noise later on in the evening and early morning

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked: We had a lovely stay at Hide & Bolt. We were very lucky with the weather so our children thoroughly enjoyed playing football on the open grass and playing in the play park. The toilet facilities are very modern and clean, I believe the owners are adding a shower which would be a very welcome addition. For all the site is directly next to a main road it is fully secured, I felt our children and dogs were safe within the enclosed grass area (care needs to be taken with young children when leaving the pitch area to use the toilet facilities as the gate onto the main road is always open) The owners were very friendly and welcoming. The site is in a beautiful part of the area and we enjoyed a day out at HighForce Waterfall which is only a about 20 minutes away. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay and would definitely return.

Disliked: The site is situated on a main road and the noise of passing traffic is quite loud, may cause an issue for very young children sleeping.
We felt the price was a little high for such a small site with only one toilet and no showering facilities.

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked: Fantastic, small family run campsite, nice climbing frame, swings and trampoline for the kids as well as a good size football pitch with 2 goals. Very clean toilet and sink (with talks of a shower coming very soon). We had the campsite to ourselves lovely and quiet, would highly recommended
