Coming to Co. Durham for active adventures, a bit of exploring with the family or just some rural relaxation? Whatever it is that brings you this way, Gallows Hill is a great place to settle down for a while. This small site is about five minutes’ drive from the town of Barnard Castle, and has fabulous views over the surrounding Teesdale hills. Direct access from the A66 means that it’s nice and easy to find, and also handily located for getting out and about to whatever activities you’ve chosen to fill your day with. And what might those activities be? Well, you’ll be just outside the North Pennines National Landscape and Yorkshire Dales National Park so there are plenty of scenic places nearby for a walk, a bike ride, some climbing or other outdoor activities. Historic attractions and museums are close by as well, and it won’t take all that long to get to Durham city centre or the spectacular shows at Kynren. Closer to home, Barnard Castle has (aside from the castle, of course) numerous shops, supermarkets, takeaways and places to eat. Pick up supplies while you’re there and you’ll be able to have a campfire to keep you warm during an evening on site. Simple facilities on site include separate men’s and women’s toilets and showers (all cleaned regularly) and a small play area to help tire the kids out ready for bed.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Location great. Instructions excellent. Price amazing!!! Will definitely go back. Being able to have a campfire was a real pull. The family have never been so relaxed. The views were amazing. Very friendly atmosphere. The little lambs were gorgeous and watching the animals were so cute.

Disliked Toilets although lovely were a bit unloved. Not bad just some cobwebs, our pitch 1 was a little rocky in places so it was difficult putting tent pegs in.

Liked Really friendly owner and very helpful. View was great, very laid back. Our kids loved playing on the play equipment and being able to see them from the pitch was great.

Liked Great host friendly and really helpful
Site has everything you need for camping - toilets and showers are clean
Little play park in sight of the tent area and the 3 new sheep were an added bonus
The road traffic really isn’t that bad

Disliked Unfortunately we had to cut our stay short due to the wind as it was so bad
With the site been on the hill it’s exposed to the high winds quite a lot - but the weather couldn’t be helped and we enjoyed our night

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Nice small site. We bought some logs and the owner provides us a small pit to use. The toilet and shower were clean and the kids loved the little play area. Good communication from the owner. We stayed 3 nights and had a great time.
