  • Co. Durham site five minutes' drive from Barnard Castle
  • Just outside the North Pennines National Landscape for scenic walks
  • Attractive rural location with easy access direct from the A66
Coming to Co. Durham for active adventures, a bit of exploring with the family or just some rural relaxation? Whatever it is that brings you this way, Gallows Hill is a great place to settle down for a while. This small site is about five minutes’ drive from the town of Barnard Castle, and has fabulous views over the surrounding Teesdale hills. Direct access from the A66 means that it’s nice and easy to find, and also handily located for getting out and about to whatever activities you’ve chosen to fill your day with. And what might those activities be? Well, you’ll be just outside the North Pennines National Landscape and Yorkshire Dales National Park so there are plenty of scenic places nearby for a walk, a bike ride, some climbing or other outdoor activities. Historic attractions and museums are close by as well, and it won’t take all that long to get to Durham city centre or the spectacular shows at Kynren. Closer to home, Barnard Castle has (aside from the castle, of course) numerous shops, supermarkets, takeaways and places to eat. Pick up supplies while you’re there and you’ll be able to have a campfire to keep you warm during an evening on site. Simple facilities on site include separate men’s and women’s toilets and showers (all cleaned regularly) and a small play area to help tire the kids out ready for bed.

What customers say

This small campsite boasts stunning countryside views & a peaceful vibe. Lee, the owner, is consistently praised for being friendly & helpful. Facilities are generally clean with hot water. Easy access to walks & Barnard Castle. Some mention road noise from the A66 & a lack of a dedicated pot-washing area. Improvements are planned.

Liked The views, Lee the owner was fantastic. Could do with a pot washing area but this wouldn’t put us off from going back.

Primitive grass and gravel RV campsite

Liked We were the only people on the site and so had the pick of the views, which were great. We received a text on the day of arrival with details and gate lock code. It was a perfect one night stopover on our journey to Yorkshire from Galloway. The site was reasonably tidy and I believe the owner has plans to improve the site. The showers were pretty good, there was an apology that they had not been cleaned that day, which probably accounted for the toilets not being very clean either.

Disliked There is a big step out of the toilet block that would benefit from having proper steps with a handrail put in for those less nimble?

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Quiet site with gorgeous views! Road noise acted like white noise and was able to get a full nights sleep. Clean facilities and drinking water available for free! Good sized pitches - we had plenty of room and felt safe and comfortable.

Disliked Only downside - there wasn’t anywhere to wash pots (unless we just couldn’t fine it!) but wasn’t a major issue and was still incredible value for money!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Delightful small camping site. Only has about 12 pitches but has the most amazing views across the Durham Countryside. The owner supplied us with enough for its price should have been 1 night , but so much wood it lasted 5 nights. Toilet and Shower facilities adequate and clean for site this size. One of the showers was not working , owner came straight out and dealt with it . Very friendly owner. Only one minor problem is coming off main road onto site which can be sharp , so make sure to indicate well before turning .Otherwise highlr recommended.
