Grass pitches for motorhomes

  • Suffolk site with well-drained grass pitches on the edge of Snape
  • A 10-minute drive from Aldeburgh on the Suffolk Heritage Coast
  • Half an hour’s walk from Snape Maltings and three dog-friendly pubs
What a lovely patch of land this is. Croft Farm Camping, on the edge of the village of Snape, is home to green fields with well-draining sandy Suffolk soil that holds up pretty nicely even after wet weather. There are walks right from the gate – the Sandlings Walk, plus miles of trails across the coast, heathlands and countryside – and three dog-friendly village pubs within half an hour’s walk, all with seasonal menus suitable for a big appetite. This friendly farm site has simple facilities including toilets, showers and chemical disposal, and barbecues are permitted. Dogs are welcome, and will surely appreciate those local walks. The sea is only five miles away, too: Aldeburgh is the closest spot, just a 10-minute drive from the site, with the rest of the Suffolk Heritage Coast stretching out for about 50 miles and hosting plenty of splendid seaside towns and shingle beaches. Croft Farm Camping is about half an hour’s walk away from scenic Snape Maltings, a lovely attraction with a concert hall, riverside walks and a good cluster of indie shops, cafés and galleries to browse. If you’re keen to get in some time on your bike, good news: there’s a cycling route along the Suffolk coast and waymarked mountain-biking trails (with pretty epic features like manmade bomb craters and sandpits) in Tunstall Forest, 15 minutes’ drive away, and Rendlesham Forest, 20 minutes away.

Liked Site was flat. Rain drained easily as sandy soil. Hot water for washing up. Lots of recycling containers. A great base to go and see the sites in the local area. Some public footpaths directly from the site which was nice. Welcome pack included what was going on locally. Warm welcome from site owners and Hendricks the very friendly pooch!

Disliked I think if it were busy, the number of showers would be a problem but the site is very new (six weeks old!) and so am sure this will be improved upon given time. Other that, nothing to complain about.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Very well organised site in a great location and on the way to being excellent. The improvements already made by the new owners are first rate, particularly the new toilets and showers, which are v good. Also really liked the welcome information pack and walking routes (although we still managed to get lost🤣).

Disliked More thought needed on where to place people - we are two retired people in a motorhome but we were placed next to a young (and noisy) family in a tent, who woke us early and did not respect the curfew. Perhaps consider an adults-only field or segregate tents from motorhomes - or both?

Biggest issue for us in our van was not being able to empty our WC on site due to restriction on green-only chemicals. We already had a blue pod in our van and were therefore unable to empty until our next site, two days later. This restriction was not made clear to us on booking - had we known, we’d have emptied at the previous site.

A minor irritation is having to wait for showers. Great as they are, having to wait for families to all take their turn in only two showers on a site with 35-odd pitches is a bit much! The additional portaloos were good but more showers needed! Sure the owners will add more to improve this given time.

From the manager: Hi Stuart, many thanks for your comments, I’m glad you picked up a few things that we will improve on next year. When we are less busy we often provide greater separation between pitches and allow people to move within the site, however when you stayed with us we were 85% occupied so had very limited scope to do this. That said, next season we will be designating our south field to be adult only and this will also not have tents permitted, our middle field will be a family field but will also restrict tents, with just the largest north field available to all users. These designations will be made clearer on the booking pages.

In terms of the blue waste we do include this on our arrival instruction email sent out 3 days before arrival but we will make it clearer on the booking pages also. We can’t allow it because the local waste treatment plant can’t take it. We did allow people with blue waste to empty their cassettes into the porterloo tanks.

We are not yet on mains drainage so have limited scope to expand the showers until we do. We have plans to get connected and convert one of our empty barns into a new shower complex, this might take us a couple of years to realise.

Powered grass campsite (XL)

Liked Beautiful setting on a farm with plenty of walks around. The pitches on the large field were massive with plenty of room for tent cars and extra shelters. Toilet and shower blocks were very clean. Enclosed field for exercising dogs and generally very dog friendly. Shop nearby. Short distance to local attractions. Very quiet and peaceful.

Disliked Not hot water for washing up. Only 2 showers and 4 toilets. The electric terminals were a large distance from the pitch allocated.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Exactly what we needed. A lovely site close to the links into Aldeburgh. Hosts were welcoming and chatty.
Utilised hot water from the shower to wash up whilst they get the hot water plumbing into the washing up area.

Disliked Super clean toilet block however I would like to have had a ladies only loo.

Local attractions

Aldeburgh (10 minutes’ drive) is a lovely place for a beach wander, with traditional fishermen’s huts, Maggi Hambling’s stunning ‘Scallop’ sculpture and a renowned fish and chip shop. Elsewhere along the coast, you could stroll among the smokehouses at Orford (15 minutes) before taking a boat trip to Orford Ness, or go birdwatching at RSPB Minsmere (25 minutes). Stylish Southwold (half an hour) is another popular pick, for its indie shops, brewery and pier. Looking into the local heritage might take you to 12th-century Framlingham Castle (20 minutes), where you can walk the walls and see the medieval great hall, or to the Anglo-Saxon royal burial site at Sutton Hoo (25 minutes). To mix up outdoor time and history, head to the National Trust’s Dunwich Heath and Beach (25 minutes), to learn about the ‘lost town’ of Dunwich and see some 13th-century ruins after wandering through the heathland – a vital habitat for rare wildlife species.
