Greenlay Pastures: Our single pitch all to ourselves. Oodles of space including a firepit...perfect

General

  • Small-scale site on a peaceful Suffolk working farm
  • On the outskirts of Bredfield; 10 minutes' drive from Woodbridge
  • A few minutes' walk from a local shop, tennis courts and a playground

Take a trip to Greenlay Pastures for some rural rejuvenation in the Suffolk countryside. This peaceful working farm is in the village of Bredfield, close to the market town of Woodbridge and the river Deben estuary (both 10 minutes' drive).

Greenlay Pastures is home to some fine-looking sheep and cows that graze and chill here alongside human guests. The farm's pastures and mature hedgerows are havens for native birds and animals, so keep an eye out for creatures as you tour its quiet terrain. In spring and summer, wild orchids and violets have also been known to spring up, adding a dash of colour to these green farm vistas.

In terms of facilities, the site has a standpipe, toilet and washroom and a separate electric shower. With plenty of space between the pitches, the experience at Greenlay Pastures is akin to wild-style stays – turn up, pick a spot and settle down in a meadow surrounded by wildlife.

Bredfield's village shop sells local produce that you can cook up on site or pack in a picnic; there's also an ace playing field with bookable tennis courts and a play area for the kids. The wider area is also easily accessible – the site's a five-minute drive from the A12, positioning you within reach of much of coastal Suffolk and Essex. The nearest full-sized supermarket is in Woodbridge (10 minutes).

Very peaceful, friendly owners, liked the honesty shop and the fridge/charging point. Clean loo and shower. Nice food in pub a walk away. Near lots of good tourist places!

    Disliked:

Very low water pressure but apparently that’s because of all the neighbouring farm land so not sure they can change it.

Just back from a 3 day stay. I absolutely adored this campsite; it was exactly what we wanted. The peace was wonderful and the small nature of the place (only 7 or 8 pitches) was perfect. Not at all crowded, even though there was space for many more. Slightly clearer signage needed to prevent a bit of wild goose chasing when we first arrived, but the low-key atmosphere was brilliant. Facilities extremely limited but clean and nicely rustic (in an old outhouse). No hot water except in the morning, and if someone has used it all to do their washing up, then none. I only ever managed slightly warm water but perhaps if you’re there early you might be lucky. Shower basic, but good provisioning of change space and hooks for your stuff. The thermostat was very iffy especially if it had previously been used that morning, perhaps to do with the hot water going off.

Owners very hands-off, only saw them a couple of times, but they took the time to say hello when I encountered them around the grounds. The enormous fire pits were fabulous, and felt quite safe to use even with our crazy (very young) children running around because they were well marked out with bricks.

Would definitely recommend for anyone wanting a wild camping experience but with some basic amenities. An ideal place to get away from the busyness of life, and listen for owls, foxes and spot dragon flies!

I felt it could have been improved with a bit of written information on arrival of any nearby shops and supermarkets. Keeping food chilled was naturally a problem, and phone batteries die with no power for charging so finding amenities had to be planned in advance when we were driving to charge the phone. Ditto local refuse facilities & their opening times (the owner very kindly took ours with her personal waste but I don’t think that would be a possibility if you had a lot).

    Disliked:

The fields were covered in large thistles and other prickles, which meant exploring them for an evening walk was pretty much out. Loads of space to look at but not use. This was more significant in the first field than the second, where a certain amount of exploration was possible. My kids liked to forage for pine cones and bug hunt, but were hampered by the spiky things which were sometimes taller than them! A few pathways mown through the fields would be lovely. As a family with very young children (6 & 3) I found it difficult to keep them entertained because most of the (large and inviting) space was unusable. I am not suggesting a play park or anything like that to spoil the wildness, however, just a bit more space to run about in, bug hunt or play in that’s not just limited to the pitch.

Local attractions

East Anglian jaunts of all kinds can be had in the county of Suffolk. Popular seaside spots like Aldeburgh and Thorpeness (both 25 minutes' drive) have appealed to writers, musicians and other artsy folk over the years – when you get a glimpse of their coastal view it's easy to see why.

Suffolk's also a major hub of historic sites, including Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) and Orford Castle (30 minutes), not forgetting splendid Sutton Hoo (15 minutes), a clutch of Anglo-Saxon burial mounds that have yielded countless treasures over the years.

After something more active? There's a spacious golf club and well-maintained public swimming pool in Woodbridge (10 minutes), while if you head down to Iken (20 minutes) you can head out in canoes and kayaks along a quiet stretch of the river Alde – seals, wading birds and (harmless) jellyfish can all be spotted here. There are also two indoor climbing centres on the outskirts of Ipswich (both 25 minutes), where you can either take on the wall straight away or book in to spend an hour or so building up your confidence with a pro climbing coach.
