  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Shop, restaurant, miniature golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site
Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions… There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site. Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops. Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows and a Sunday car boot fair, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

What customers say

This large, bustling site offers tons of activities for families, like a shopping village and funfair. Pitches are spacious, staff are friendly. However, washrooms are dated and often not clean. Some found it noisy and expensive for what's offered.

Liked The choice of activities and things to do. Plus an added treat of the car show was fab!
Lovely space in the non electric part and very peaceful.

Disliked Wasps! They were relentless round our camp. Can't be helped though.

Liked For how busy the site was for a Bank Holiday weekend it was relatively quiet. There is lots on site including shops, the wonderful owl sanctuary, cafes, village shop and the Sunday boot fair. A bonus was an unexpected car show and music for the weekend which was great. Seems they do loads of event through the year so worth looking out for.

Disliked The wifi signal wasn't great so if hoping to do a bit of work whilst away you definitely need a wifi booster system. Evenings are quieter in terms of everything shuts up around 5 or 530 apart from the Legends Sports bar and the fun fair but it was nice to walk around the park still. The toilets seemed to leak a fair bit throughout the stay so could do with a refresh.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked No formal pitches, you can set up wherever you like.

Disliked Showers were cold on the second day. The cleanliness of the showers and toilets was very poor. Locks on two of the toilet doors broken.
The Legends bar music was so loud it made visiting it very unpleasant. We tried sitting outside but it was so smokey it was awful.

Liked Pitch space and site is very good, plenty for people of all ages to do. Lots of space for kids to run around.

Disliked The major downside to this site is the shower/toilet and washing up facilities. If these were upgraded it would be one of the best sites around but they are minging in all honesty. Investment definitely needed in this area. Maybe local ‘pop up’ food vendors on site once a week would be good too. We wont be returning because of the facilities unfortunately.

Liked Well run with plenty of amenities spread across the site. Very friendly staff and other guests. Entertainment, something for everyone. Good prices for food and drink. Car boot twice a week and shops on site. Amenities were clean and functional. Free WiFi.

Disliked Not keen on fairground, but that's just me.

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements. This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found. Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
