  • Peaceful camping with views of the river Stour in coastal Suffolk
  • Alton Water Sports Centre and Suffolk Ski Centre 15 minutes’ drive
  • Small, off-grid site with direct access to Harkstead river beach
How about camping among spruce and fir trees on a tiny, woodland site? In a peaceful spot overlooking the river Stour? And what’s even better is that Nether Hall Farm has – wait for it – direct access to Harkstead river beach via a private track for lots of family fun splashing about in the water. (Water access is tide dependent, so keep an eye on the tide times posted on site.) Add in the miles of local footpaths to explore in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, plus the spectacular views of Shotley Peninsula, and this is one fab off-grid camping spot on a working arable farm. If you go about your daily life quietly on site, you might get to spot song birds, birds of prey, owls, hares and deer. Firepits are provided, and the site owners have logs available for purchase. There’s also a gas-powered shower (great for warming up after days on the beach) and composting loos. Harkstead (five minutes’ drive) has a kids’ play area on the village green, while Shotley (10 minutes) has several inns and restaurants and handy stores for bits and pieces. You can catch the foot ferry from the marina here to Harwich and Felixstowe – or you might prefer to drop in at Shotley Vineyard (15 minutes) to sample a few English wines. More amenities – including great family pubs – can be found in the local villages of Holbrook (five minutes), Stutton and Chelmondiston (both 10 minutes).

Highly recommended for peace & privacy. Spacious, secluded pitches with water, picnic tables & fire pits. Enjoy the nearby river beach for swimming/kayaking & wildlife spotting. Clean facilities, but some pitches bumpy & showers sometimes cool.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite (woodland)

Liked Everything! We have been coming here every year for a while now. Beautiful surroundings, nice and quiet. Perfect for a relaxing break with the kids, who also love it here. We especially enjoyed Matilda's cake shack in the village! Hopefully the pub will be open again for our next visit. Really friendly and helpful owners too!

Disliked Absolutely nothing.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite (woodland)

Liked Wonderful gem of a campsite, each pitch has its own little clearing amongst the trees, feels very secluded and means you don’t/rarely see the other campers. Each pitch has its own water tap, table and fire pit - very convenient and the fire pit is a great touch and fantastic to sit around at night (plus reasonably priced logs available to buy on-site too). Owner is very friendly & polite, the Eco-toilets are surprisingly clean/odourless and well looked after. The campsite is surrounded by beautiful, quiet countryside far away from any habitation and a few mins walk down a private track to the river beach/shoreline, all making this a magical camping experience. Definitely coming back here again!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite (woodland)

Liked A wonderful setting on the estuary with large, secluded, open woodland pitches, each with its own tap. Not a campsite with lots of silly and fiddly rules. Really easy going and relaxing in a beautiful place 💕

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite (woodland)

Liked Hidden gem!!
Absolutely beautiful site. So private and generally peaceful. A stones throw from the river beach where we enjoyed some time on the water paddleboarding. The lay out of the pitches are very private and offered a huge amount of space to set up our little home from home.

Dark sky area with the Milky Way visable. The wildlife was plentiful with owls, foxes, hares and wild geese. A beautiful area to reconnect with nature and be at one with the earth.

We shall definitely be returning with our grandchildren next year.

Thank you for a lovely stay.

Disliked Unfortunately, on our arrival and continuing into the next day there were a very large group of people that had been allowed to set up camp in the field opposite the main site itself. They even had two cars of guests which left later in the evening.

They were extremely loud - screaming, shouting and riding quad bikes on the field for hours and hours on end. This absolutely ruined the peace and tranquillity of this sites and it's try essence.

My advice is to keep the site as low profile as possible. It is perfect the way it is!
It would be such a shame to lose your wonderful reviews by allowing large parties like that to disturb everyone's peace.

Local attractions

Alton Water Sports Centre is set in 400 acres of countryside, where you can wander walking and cycling tracks, go fishing and try out watersports on the reservoir. All equipment, as well as bikes, can be hired at the sports centre. Suffolk Ski Centre (both 15 minutes’ drive) also has some high-octane activities, from snowboarding to skiing on the dry ski slope. More gentle local pursuits might include visiting National Trust-owned attractions including Pin Mill (10 minutes), the setting for Arthur Ransome’s ‘Swallows and Amazons’ on the Orwell estuary, and Flatford Mill (half an hour) in Constable Country, an area with glorious trails for hiking and cycling alongside the river Stour. Spoil well-behaved kids with a day out among the rare-breed animals and reptiles at Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park (20 minutes), where you can also set them up with experiences like anteater-feeding sessions. And if everybody’s keen to get down to the waterside, you can walk to Harkstead river beach directly from the campsite in 15 minutes – but remember to check the tide times.
