  • Peaceful site on a farm near the village of Hartest
  • Bury St Edmunds and Ickworth House within 15 minutes' drive
  • Back to basics pitches; hire fat-tyre electric bicycles from the farm
Bring on the chilled country days… peace and quiet are served up by the spade at Waldegrave Farm, a secluded site between the villages of Lawshall and Hartest. Should you require their urban amenities, the towns of Bury St Edmunds, Lavenham and Long Melford are all around 15 minutes away by car. Rural relaxation is really the name of the game here though – all the classic ingredients are on hand for your stay on site, including hedgerows giving a home to wildlife, a little brook flowing through the grounds and plenty of open space for not doing very much at all (although one might stretch to creating a campfire and cracking open a beer or two...?). There’s little here to distract from the vibe: amenities on the basic pitches are limited to running water, but there are no toilets or showers on site. According to the owners, this is not so much a campsite as a farm with remote pitches around it. If you want to be alone or just with your group, this is the place to come. The end goal is that staying at Waldegrave Farm will make you like you're the only people here, no matter how many pitches are occupied. Guests in search of rural pursuits to fill their days can easily access lots of fab walks and bike rides from here, striding forth for half an hour for pints in a country pub, perchance, or wandering off to the local vineyard. Stately homes, gorgeous gardens and river boat trips are all within half an hour’s drive, or you could stay on the road for slightly less than an hour to mix with the clever folk of Cambridge.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Second time we’ve stayed at this site. A fantastic find. If you want a truly wild camping experience with not another person in sight, this is the place. Owner is a great bloke too.

Disliked Nothing - it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked A lovely little corner of a field backing onto woodland. Very quiet and beautiful views. Lovely walks including a mile or so to excellent village pub.
Be aware that access on grass uphill could be problematic in wet weather.
Area for fire available but we didn't use it.

Disliked Did feel it was a little expensive for the use of a tap and the corner of a field. Weak phone signal.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked I absolutely loved everything about this place. The peace, the birds, the tranquility. I was lucky enough to spot a pair of buzzards and kites. Pheasants, partridges walking past the door of my tent while i was having my morning coffee!!. Such a lovely place to reset. I'll definitely love to come back, if they'll have me.
The owner came to greet me with his beautiful little dog. He also kindly showed me to my pitch. I honestly didn't want to leave.

Local attractions

There’s much to be said for just wandering out onto local lanes for a rural roam or bike ride, but if you’d prefer a proper woodland trail, consider hitting Long Melford Country Park or the Suffolk Wildlife Trust nature reserve. And if you’re the kind who requires a suitable reward to get you moving, it’ll take you around 45 minutes to walk to Giffords Hall vineyard for a tour and taster. Ickworth House and its surrounding estate, 20 minutes’ drive from the farm, is a fab place to spend a day out – there’s much to see as you wander around the gardens and the huge Italianate rotunda of the main house. Kentwell Hall and the lovely Spencers Garden are all within a 20-minute drive too. For town-based trotting, Lavenham, Bury St Edmunds and Long Melford are good places to potter around, and Cambridge is around a 45-minute drive away. Arty types should head to Sudbury, 20 minutes away, to visit Gainsborough’s House and board boat trips through the landscapes that inspired Constable.
