  • Peaceful two-acre field a 10-minute walk from Stanton village, Suffolk
  • Bury St Edmunds 20 minutes’ drive; Lowestoft beach one hour
  • Dogs welcome; excellent stargazing; a five-minute drive from a winery
Bromptons Farm, on the edge of the village of Stanton (a 10-minute walk), is a top spot for a peaceful Suffolk holiday. Staying here puts you within easy driving distance of historic towns like Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) and Stowmarket (25 minutes), as well as woodland trails like those found in Thetford Forest (25 minutes). The region’s coast is a little farther, with beaches such as Aldeburgh (pebbly) and Lowestoft (sandy) about one hour’s drive away. The site has a two-acre meadow where you can set up freely – there’s no being slave to marked bays here. There’s heaps of room for the kids to run around, and the family dog will almost certainly wag its tail in excitement at the prospect of sniffing every little corner of this great big field. A toilet/shower block, charging facilities and recycling points sweeten the experience further. Hiking (and wildlife-viewing) highlights in the vicinity include the Knettishall Heath Nature Reserve (15 minutes), with grazing wild ponies; and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust - East Wretham Heath Nature Reserve (25 minutes), where you might spot wading birds around the lakes, plus stoats and roe deer. If you need to stock up on grillables, Stanton has a couple of convenience stores, as well as a fish and chips shop for those who don’t fancy tending to hot coals all evening. You can also check out the restaurant at Wyken Vineyards or hit the pubs in Bardwell (both five minutes). After dinner, stretch out on the grass and take in the spectacle of the night sky – with such low light pollution here, stargazing is on a different level.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked This was our fourth visit to Bromptons Farm it has the most beautiful surroundings. The sunsets are amazing and the moon rising is not to be missed. It’s such a peaceful place to relax. You can choose your own pitch which is nice. The facilities are spotless and another shower and toilet are being added. Brendon, the owner and Ellie the site manageress could not be more friendly and obliging, nothing is too much trouble. We will be going again very soon and have also booked to go to the Van Fest can’t wait

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely open space with freedom to pitch up wherever you wish.
Campfires allowed.
Dog friendly.
View of the fields.
Quiet evenings stargazing.
Owners daughter was very friendly.

Disliked There is only 1 shower presently, however this didn’t hinder us at all but may for some larger families.
The permanent residents living on site did have children that would frequently want to go inside our van despite being told no and did try and take our sons football.

From the manager: Ahh thank you so much – and for making our little lady’s day! She loved chatting with you 😊

Just so you know, the children you mentioned aren’t actually here all the time – they’re seasonal guests. We’ve had a couple of similar comments this weekend so we’ve spoken to the family to make sure it doesn’t happen again. There is a family who work here too and it’s possible (but pretty unlikely) it was their kids – they’re normally really used to visitors – but we’ve had a word with them as well just in case.

The good news is we’ve got another toilet, another shower, and another wash basin going in over the next few weeks – so hopefully if you come back you can see our little campsite growing.

And as for the sausage dog… with Benya it’s probably not happening 😬 but if the reviews keep asking, we might just have to cave 😂

Would love to see you all back here again sometime! 💚

Will definitely stay again. Great budget friendly site.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked Quiet location, spacious pitches. No electric means you can park where you wish. Toilet and shower facilities clean. Washing up facilities clean, only downside is there is only one for the whole site. Again, we were aware that the site has only been open for a few months.

Disliked Toilet and showers not finished but cost reflects this, so not a big deal.

Local attractions

The steam-engine age is alive and well at Bressingham Steam Museum & Gardens (20 minutes), where you might take a ride on a narrow-gauge railway and climb aboard vintage engines. The ‘Dad’s Army’ displays ought to appeal to nostalgic TV buffs, while green-fingered visitors should check out the Japanese garden and ornamental ponds in the 17-acre gardens. An English Heritage property, the 12th-century Thetford Priory (20 minutes) was closed by order of Henry VIII in 1540. Its ruins now spread over a large area just north of the River Ouse. Thetford also has the Dad’s Army Museum and the Thetford Castle Mound, said to be Britain’s tallest medieval earthwork. Norfolk airfields witnessed plenty of action during World War II. Military museums in the area include the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (25 minutes), housed in a former control tower; and the Red Feather Club 95th Bomb Group Museum (half an hour), which tells the story of a US Air Force team.
