  • Peaceful two-acre field a 10-minute walk from Stanton village, Suffolk
  • Bury St Edmunds 20 minutes’ drive; Lowestoft beach one hour
  • Dogs welcome; excellent stargazing; a five-minute drive from a winery
Bromptons Farm, on the edge of the village of Stanton (a 10-minute walk), is a top spot for a peaceful Suffolk holiday. Staying here puts you within easy driving distance of historic towns like Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) and Stowmarket (25 minutes), as well as woodland trails like those found in Thetford Forest (25 minutes). The region’s coast is a little farther, with beaches such as Aldeburgh (pebbly) and Lowestoft (sandy) about one hour’s drive away. The site has a two-acre meadow where you can set up freely – there’s no being slave to marked bays here. There’s heaps of room for the kids to run around, and the family dog will almost certainly wag its tail in excitement at the prospect of sniffing every little corner of this great big field. A toilet/shower block, charging facilities and recycling points sweeten the experience further. Hiking (and wildlife-viewing) highlights in the vicinity include the Knettishall Heath Nature Reserve (15 minutes), with grazing wild ponies; and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust - East Wretham Heath Nature Reserve (25 minutes), where you might spot wading birds around the lakes, plus stoats and roe deer. If you need to stock up on grillables, Stanton has a couple of convenience stores, as well as a fish and chips shop for those who don’t fancy tending to hot coals all evening. You can also check out the restaurant at Wyken Vineyards or hit the pubs in Bardwell (both five minutes). After dinner, stretch out on the grass and take in the spectacle of the night sky – with such low light pollution here, stargazing is on a different level.

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Nice site with great choose your own pitch set up.

Toilets and showers were nice, be even better once all the work is finished.

The site is a work in progress but is already really nice with welcoming owners.

Very much looking forward to coming back.

Disliked The sign on the road is a bit small and hard to see. Otherwise nothing worth mentioning.

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The owner, Brendan, is very communicative and helpful.
The field is spacious so it's possible to find a quiet corner. There's a few picnic tables available as well. Right now in the spring there is also tufts of daffodils all over which is a very nice addition.
The shower block is freshly renovated and clean.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked Nothing at all

Disliked Several dumped caravans, a few static caravans and clearly a semi permanent home for a few people. Trash all over the site. The showers and toilets were not clean. I left after 10 mins and requested a refund. Which I got. Was absolutely nothing like the pics whatsoever, avoid

From the manager: Thank you for your review.

As outlined in our prior email correspondence, the areas you mentioned were affected by temporary circumstances involving seasonal guests who were in the process of relocating. These matters were addressed immediately and are not permanent features of the site.

Recent heavy rainfall also impacted the ground conditions and overall presentation at the time of your visit. While we work hard to maintain the site in all weather and seasons, prolonged wet conditions can inevitably affect its appearance.

On arrival, we personally welcomed you and allocated a more sheltered pitch due to the strong winds to make your stay more comfortable. Our facilities had been cleaned that morning, and cleanliness is taken very seriously. We are also in the process of completing upgrades to add additional showers and toilets.

We respectfully disagree with the suggestion that the site is “nothing like the pictures,” as our photographs accurately reflect the grounds and layout. However, we recognise that the recent heavy rainfall and the temporary conditions on the day did not meet your expectations.

As requested, your refund was processed in full shortly after your departure. We remain committed to providing a welcoming and peaceful environment for all our guests.

Hedgerow FHU grass travel trailer campsite

Liked A lovely low fuss, peaceful site. Due to the bad weather access to the main field was not ideal but we were offered another pitch which was beautiful. The hosts were very accommodating and made sure we were happy. The toilets are under refurbishment but were very clean and usable. Lovely site and will be back in the summer. There is a pub, chip shop and local shop all within walking distance

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked The area was nice. Local chippy and news agent close by 5-10 minutes walk. Showers and toilets was ok.
Great for star gazing.

Disliked Only downside was the ground was soaking wet and slippy. Obviously down to the weather so couldn’t be helped. Maybe more area needs to be stones or hard standing for bad weather times of the year.

Liked Lovely site with great views, I went to test out my tentbox, everything went smoothly.
Well looked after campsite, it was fairly muddy due to the time of year, facilities were kept clean as possible which was good.

Local attractions

The steam-engine age is alive and well at Bressingham Steam Museum & Gardens (20 minutes), where you might take a ride on a narrow-gauge railway and climb aboard vintage engines. The ‘Dad’s Army’ displays ought to appeal to nostalgic TV buffs, while green-fingered visitors should check out the Japanese garden and ornamental ponds in the 17-acre gardens. An English Heritage property, the 12th-century Thetford Priory (20 minutes) was closed by order of Henry VIII in 1540. Its ruins now spread over a large area just north of the River Ouse. Thetford also has the Dad’s Army Museum and the Thetford Castle Mound, said to be Britain’s tallest medieval earthwork. Norfolk airfields witnessed plenty of action during World War II. Military museums in the area include the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (25 minutes), housed in a former control tower; and the Red Feather Club 95th Bomb Group Museum (half an hour), which tells the story of a US Air Force team.
