Black Barn Farm: Electric Pitches (photo added by manager on 08/08/2022)

General

  • Peaceful adults-only site two miles from the Norfolk Broads
  • A 15-minute drive from Norwich city centre; 25 minutes from the coast
  • Atmospheric night-time vibes from lit woodlands; café and farm shop

If boating on The Broads has long been on your bucket list, take a look here: the dog-friendly Black Barn Farm is a peaceful place to pitch up two miles from the edge of the national park. Here, the adults-only pitches are in a 22-acre field in an established orchard and surrounded by woodlands, making for a rather chilled-out stay.

This area is known as the big sky country, so splendid sunsets and lights in the trees create a pretty nice night-time vibe. You’ll be able to kick off the evening with a firepit or barbecue too, as both are permitted on site.

A 15-minute drive from Norwich, this site is on the edge of Salhouse, a rural Broads village. So, bridleways and footpaths may be the first thing to capture your attention, as they lead the way to walking, wildlife spotting and canoe hire in the Salhouse Broad – or there's a place to launch your own canoe or paddleboard, two miles away from the site.

Convenience is key at this site, starting with the toilets and showers inside the barn, all heated with auto light switches for that extra ease. The barn also has a small farm shop and a café that serves up sizeable breakfasts plus sandwiches and snacks. Nearby, a train station and bus stop are within walking distance with regular services to Norwich city centre or the coast.

Foodie? The local food shop is a 20-minute walk away along a public footpath (or a five-minute car journey). For more specific bits, there’s a bigger supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away and beer aficionados will find a brewery and pub five minutes’ drive away too.

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 2 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

The breakfast at the Black Farm Barn restaurant.02/13/2024

The breakfast at the Black Farm Barn restaurant.

    Disliked:

Although the site seems relatively new, there seemed a lack of effort to make it nice. Near the restaurant area where you have to pass to get onto the files, there is load of rubbish and storage tanks which are not unsightly. The road to the site is pot holed and full of puddles. There are no concrete or gravel paths to the waste water and bin areas so very muddy when wet. Posts not fixed securely into the ground and electric cables left loose on the grass. Seems like the owner makes his money from the restaurant and shop and campers are an afterthought for a bit of extra cash! Won’t be recommending.

From the manager...

Sorry we will be closing next winter to people thinking February has the same weather conditions as July.
This will allow site maintenance to happen.
I now know why other sites don’t open.
Many thanks for your review

The toilets and showers are fairly new. Peaceful.

    Disliked:

On arrival parts of the site around the back of the café / shops look scruffy and unkempt. The grass pitches had long grass which had not been cut in my opinion for at least a couple of months.
The toilets and showers despite being fairly new, are not cleaned regularly. From my experience not even daily! There is excess limescale on the shower fittings. The washing up facility was outside under cover but we didn't use it as it was so dirty and didn't look like it had been cleaned for months if at all.
Signage on the site is non existent, you have to rummage around to find where the chemical waste goes and we never did find where the grey waste was supposed to go!
Although I contacted the owner prior to arrival, he said he would not see us on arrival as he had to go to Ipswich - we never did see him!
At £34 a night for mid November we felt this represented very poor value for money. At that price per night we certainly expected the facilities to be clean!

Between 01/10-01/02 the pheasant shoot season is live. Our dogs don’t like fireworks let alone gunshots so was a slight issue for us. However, this is not anything to do with Black Barn Farm as it was audible in other parts of the county.

Local attractions

Nosy about Norwich (15 minutes’ drive)? Those of you who aren’t familiar with this cultural city will find there’s much to stick your nose into, from bargain hunting around the old market to a full-on shopping trip or a pitstop tour of the independent eateries and historic sites… the highlight reel includes the hilltop Norwich Castle and the 11th-century cathedral.

Those of you who are keen to weave a bit of the seaside into your way will want to head on over to the sandy beach and dunes at Winterton beach (35 minutes) or onto Great Yarmouth (25 minutes). This seaside resort town is all about the traditional, including a funfair, sandy beaches and the Sea Life Great Yarmouth aquarium.

Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens (25 minutes) has red pandas, tigers and leopards among them, while Pettitts Animal Adventure Park (25 minutes) couples up snakes, wallabies and alpacas with rides and playgrounds.
