  • Peaceful adults-only site two miles from the Norfolk Broads
  • A 15-minute drive from Norwich city centre; 25 minutes from the coast
  • Atmospheric night-time vibes from lit woodlands; café and farm shop
If boating on The Broads has long been on your bucket list, take a look here: the dog-friendly Black Barn Farm is a peaceful place to pitch up two miles from the edge of the national park. Here, the adults-only pitches are in a 22-acre field in an established orchard and surrounded by woodlands, making for a rather chilled-out stay. This area is known as the big sky country, so splendid sunsets and lights in the trees create a pretty nice night-time vibe. You’ll be able to kick off the evening with a firepit or barbecue too, as both are permitted on site. A 15-minute drive from Norwich, this site is on the edge of Salhouse, a rural Broads village. So, bridleways and footpaths may be the first thing to capture your attention, as they lead the way to walking, wildlife spotting and canoe hire in the Salhouse Broad – or there's a place to launch your own canoe or paddleboard, two miles away from the site. Convenience is key at this site, starting with the toilets and showers inside the barn, all heated with auto light switches for that extra ease. The barn also has a small farm shop and a café that serves up sizeable breakfasts plus sandwiches and snacks. Nearby, a train station and bus stop are within walking distance with regular services to Norwich city centre or the coast. Foodie? The local food shop is a 20-minute walk away along a public footpath (or a five-minute car journey). For more specific bits, there’s a bigger supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away and beer aficionados will find a brewery and pub five minutes’ drive away too.

Liked: The shower and toilet facilities were clean and big, lovely quiet field and nice to walk to pooch around in the mornings! The restaurant/cafe was a perfect addition to mornings too!

Disliked: We wish that Black Barn Farm restaurant was open later as we would be happy to eat there for dinner too as it was so lovely and welcoming for us and the dog

Liked: That it is an adults only site. With generous level pitches Just a bus ride from Norwich or Wroxham. The barn now contains some shops and a cafe. We were at this site last year, it's good to see it go from strength to strength. Well done to Trevor and his team.

Liked: Large flat pitches Quiet at night Cafe on site Showers hot and powerful

Disliked: Cleanliness of toilets, it didn’t appear they were cleaned during our 3 nights as same toothpaste drips down side of sink cabinet Lack of washing facilities as there are no washbasins- v small sink in toilet but too small to use and no mirror. Could do with a campsite notice board with basic info included such as emergency contact, bus and train times, rules for recycling etc No WiFi servíce Overall seemed quite pricey for what was provided

Local attractions

Nosy about Norwich (15 minutes’ drive)? Those of you who aren’t familiar with this cultural city will find there’s much to stick your nose into, from bargain hunting around the old market to a full-on shopping trip or a pitstop tour of the independent eateries and historic sites… the highlight reel includes the hilltop Norwich Castle and the 11th-century cathedral. Those of you who are keen to weave a bit of the seaside into your way will want to head on over to the sandy beach and dunes at Winterton beach (35 minutes) or onto Great Yarmouth (25 minutes). This seaside resort town is all about the traditional, including a funfair, sandy beaches and the Sea Life Great Yarmouth aquarium. Once you’ve picked out those colourful fishies in the tanks, bigger animals wander around the local wildlife parks and zoos. Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens (25 minutes) has red pandas, tigers and leopards among them, while Pettitts Animal Adventure Park (25 minutes) couples up snakes, wallabies and alpacas with rides and playgrounds.
