  • Environmentally aware site set over six acres of Norfolk countryside
  • Five minutes' drive from North Walsham; 15 mins from Mundesley beach
  • Firewood available; 1.5 miles to Weavers' Way trail and rail station
Looking for a break that'll make you feel as free as a bird? Swoop down for a stay at Magpie Meadow, a back to basics Norfolk site with fab mega-sized pitches and far-reaching rural views. The site is also conveniently located 15 minutes’ drive from top coastal spots like Mundesley and Bacton beach. You can expect a warm welcome and relaxed vibe here – this site bills itself as 'family-friendly, dog-friendly, cat-friendly… and generally friendly'. It's also an eco-friendly place within easy reach of public transport options: those skipping the car can arrive via North Walsham railway station (20 minutes' walk), then get out and about on miles of bike-friendly trails (including the nearby Quiet Lanes Network and car-free Weavers' Way). This community-run spot is run on the basis that 'nature does it best'; as such, the site is proud that it's totally free of tarmac tracks and manicured hedges. Parts of the grounds are also gradually being rewilded with native flowers and trees, and limits on guest numbers mean that the whole middle of the meadow is always left as clear as it looks in the photos. In terms of facilities, Magpie Meadow is low on frills, with just two flushing loos, a low-impact shower, drinking water and a washing-up point provided; you're welcome to bring your own toilet with you. Barbecues are allowed here (as long as they're at least 60cm/two feet off the ground and burning charcoal only) and bundles of sustainably sourced logs are available to buy on site (although please note campfires may be banned during particularly hot and dry weather).

What customers say

This peaceful, eco-friendly site has spacious, private pitches in a wildflower meadow. Guests love the spotless facilities, friendly owners, and natural, back-to-basics vibe. Showers are basic (cold water), but the ethos and space for kids are appreciated. Great for exploring coast/Broads. Highly recommended relaxing escape.

Primitive grass campsite (woodland)

Liked Quiet campsite. Private , spacious pitch. Friendly and helpful owner. Lovely, clean toilets and wash up area. Plenty of activities.

Disliked Not so much disliked but would have preferred a more traditional shower set up with water heated in some way - maybe solar panels?, especially if we were staying more than a couple of nights.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review . As we are a low impact campsite we do steer away from the traditional shower block set up . Most of our campers who book for a long stay find the showers more than adequate for their stay .
We are always on hand to demonstrate how the showers work if our campers are having problems.
It makes our campers very aware of the amount of water which can get wasted on the touch of a button in traditional homes and campsites .
Hope to see you back at Magpie meadow soon

Powered grass campsite (woodland)

Liked Super back to nature camping (almost)
My son booked this and asked if we wanted to go with them. We have a caravan.
Good location, friendly owners. Large pitches and plenty of free space.
We didn’t know what to expect as used to club sites but more than happy here.
Basic facilities but clean and well looked after. Kids loved it and so did dog.

Disliked No hot water but not a problem as electric hook-up and caravan overcame it.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We are very different to club sites so it sounds like we the opposite to the sites you normally use . ( thank you for giving the wild low impact camping a go )
Bearing this in mind it sounds like you enjoyed your stay with your family and found our facilities
Clean and well looked after.
We aim for children and adults to experience the back to nature camping experience, with little impact to the environment. With this in mind some luxuries like hot water at the moment aren’t supplied by the site .
We do have the electric hook ups for campers who would like a touch more luxury.
Hope to see you back

Powered grass campsite (woodland)

Liked Location, clean facilities, space around pitches.
Owners lovely

Disliked Cold water showers so we filled the pump with our own warm water mix

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Great review thank you .
As we are a low impact campsite our showers do require campers to supply warm water for them or opt for the natural cold shower.
We do break away from the very traditional campsites at Magpie meadows , wild camping with very low impact.
We aim to provide very clean functional facilities and a space in which children and adults can enjoy the beautiful meadow and the north Norfolk countryside
Many thanks for visiting us see you back at Magpie meadow

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked Space, eco friendly nature of it, location, the welcome

Disliked Nothing dramatic. Hooks in back of toilet doors could do with being a different colour as didn’t see them and hit my head.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review .
It’s great to hear you loved our eco friendly low impact campsite.
We are very fortunate to have a great location in the centre north Nofolk with easy access to the beautiful coast and so close to the broads and other great attractions . We are within walking distance via an off road public footpath to the historic market town of North Walsham .
We will definitely look into the colour of the coat hooks !
See you back soon

Powered grass campsite (woodland)

Liked A beautiful spot that is well laid out with plenty of space between pitches. We had our own picnic bench in the shade which was a welcome touch as it was hot and sunny during our stay. There were two toilets for the whole site but we didn’t find this a problem as there was never a queue and they were always very clean. The site was well maintained with a reception shed that contained useful items for sale and to borrow, and there were games sited around the place including chess sets and a croquet set to hire. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Site manager/owner Tina was so welcoming and helpful and we found other campers very respectful of the site rules including quiet time. Would definitely stay again.

Disliked Not the fault of the site as it’s a natural thing but there were quite a few ticks about due to the long grass so be aware of this. We weren’t bitten, thankfully, but found a few on our dogs, despite very recent treatment.

Powered grass campsite (woodland)

Liked Everything about the site, great location for exploring coast, broads, cycling. Clean site, great space for children to play, liked the long meadow with paths cut out, we stayed on electric woodland and although not too hot this space would have been great in hot weather. Owners were polite, helpful and onside if needed. We all enjoyed our stay and will be returning next year.

Disliked Nothing

Local attractions

Touring the Norfolk countryside on foot is a top-notch pursuit, whether that involves taking a constitutional on the peaceful country lanes around the site or day-long treks along the length and breadth of the car-free Weavers’ Way (five minutes' drive). Seaside strolls can also be arranged if you settle down here; the stretch of coast between Bacton and Mundesley is particularly pleasant (both 20 minutes). Boating in the Broads is another brill bet, especially if you're curious about the area's birdlife. Wroxham (20 minutes) has several local businesses that hire out vessels for the day, but professionally organised cruises are also on offer if your rowing skills leave something to be desired. Wroxham Barns (15 minutes) is also worth dropping by – this one-stop attraction is home to a shopping village, kids’ play farm and several food outlets. Newcomers curious about the area's history can head down to Felbrigg Hall (15 minutes), a rather regal National Trust estate. The community-run Museum of the Broads (15 minutes), meanwhile, houses well-preserved examples of the craft that cruised these waters in days gone by.
