  • Luxury lodges in leafy lakeside gardens at Brinkley in Cambridgeshire
  • Cambridge half an hour’s drive; Newmarket Racecourse 10 minutes
  • Private decks and exclusive-use bathrooms; picnic gazebo and treehouse
Line up in an orderly fashion, glamping families or couples in search of romance. Here’s a treat for you. What with a handy location half an hour’s drive from Cambridge and 15 minutes from Newmarket, and a peaceful setting amid extensive leafy gardens, the luxury accommodation at Piggles Retreat has a lot going for it. On the outskirts of the rural Cambridgeshire village of Brinkley, exceptional amenities in each lavishly appointed wooden lodge encompass heating, a comfy double bed and sofa bed sleeping up to three guests (all bed linen is provided), a small and well-equipped kitchen area and a flatscreen TV for lazy evenings in. Exclusive-use bathrooms with power showers are close by and marble basins are a few steps away. Each lodge has private decking with a barbecue, table and chairs. When the fickle British weather permits, you can hide away in the extensive lakeside gardens, picnic in the gazebo, or climb up to the treehouse platform for some chilled downtime with a good book. Organise a foray into Cambridge colleges and museums, or hang out on site – whatever you choose to do, there’s plenty to see and do. Take a rowing boat out on the lake – keep an eye out for the resident ducks – hone your badminton skills or challenge fellow glamping guests to putting on the site’s mini-golf course.

From the manager: The comments from these guests are incorrect as they only stayed less than an hour in the Log Cabin. They were under the impression that the cabins had on-suite bathrooms. Their ratings should be ignored. They cannot give ratings on Value for money, Accomodation, Facilities, Cleanliness. The guests eventually arrived at 10.30pm and as for a rating of 2 for customer service when I had to travel 3 times to meet them at the location and then get phone calls to say that they will be later than they thought. Their review must be removed as it is totally false and will put customers off from booking. Our reviews on our website and AirBnb give 5 star ratings and we have been awarded as a Super Host.

Local attractions

Cambridge (half an hour’s drive) awaits you with its spectacular array of historic colleges, from the medieval turrets and spires of Corpus Christie to the Gothic extravagance of Kings. Go punting along The Backs (don’t miss the bizarre wooden Mathematical Bridge), have a nose around the modern art at Kettle’s Yard or see masterly Dutch Golden Age paintings in the Fitzwilliam Museum. There’s more heritage to be examined at the 11th-century cathedral in Ely (40 minutes), with its jewel-like stained-glass windows and soaring nave. Alternatively, combine a walk in gorgeous gardens with a history lesson with a tour of the Tudor-era mansion at Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill (15 minutes). Horse-racing fans can get their bets on at Newmarket Racecourse (10 minutes), visit the National Horse Racing Museum (15 minutes) and The National Stud (10 minutes). Should you be travelling with the kids, treat them to more encounters with animals in the shape of big cats, kangaroos and zebras at Linton Zoo (20 minutes).
